I've gotten TrueType fonts working, using the Windows directory. Here's how I did it: 1. Using SaX2, I added /win_c/windows/fonts to the fontlist. 2. I went into the /win_c/windows/fonts directory and did: ttmkfdir > fonts.dir ttmkfdir > fonts.scale (The second command could probably be replaced by a copy.) And that was it. There have been other recipes around here which presumably also work. Paul

ttmkfdir > fonts.dir ttmkfdir > fonts.scale
Just do 'ttmkfdir -o fonts.dir && cp fonts.dir fonts.scale'. After that,
delete the first line in fonts.scale as fonts.scale doesn't have the number
of entries at the top.

Is the correct file "fonts.scale" or "fonts.scale.msttfonts" as I believe you suggested in an earlier post? Or does it matter? And does the extra line at the top of fonts.scale mess anything up? I seemed to have truetype working even with it (though I've now taken your advice and removed it). Paul

If you put your fonts in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype, you have to name it fonts.scale.any_name_you_like. SuSEConfig will combine the various font.scale.X files into one file and will create a combined fonts.dir. This is because ttmkfdir won't handle japanese and korean tt fonts correctly and thus will mess up fonts.dir.

I haven't really checked if it does harm. It could well be that it doesn't, though it wouldn't be the correct format. -- Penguins to save the dinosaurs -- Handelsblatt on Linux for S/390
Is there a good mirror site for the SuSE7.1 updates? I have spent nearly two hours trying to download a 5.5Mb update file from the SuSE ftp site. It downloads for a short burst of between about three and twenty seconds and then it stalls for about ten to thirty seconds. Sometimes the stall is much longer and it has stopped downloading completely three times. I have had to do a "resume" twice, and am still only 60% through the download. Download speed varies from 1.2K/sec to 2.1K/sec. I have tried several times during the day and have always only got the very slow speeds and very short bursts, so I gave up. But tonight I decided to keep trying and see what happened. I would rather like to download some of the update files, but at the moment that is impossible. I can usually achieve a download speed of about 5K/s, but not with the SuSE site! This is not a flame against SuSE, merely a statement of what happens. Often, I find that Sourceforge is not much better for speed. So, can anyone recommend a mirror site (preferably not too far from England!) where I could get reasonable speeds? Many thanks. In reply to my request for a good SuSE mirror site, Anders Johansson and Michael Hasenstein both recommended: ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/ I have just downloaded some files from there and got download speeds of more than 4.5KB/s. That's much better than the less than 2KB/s I was getting before! Also it only stalled three times for just a few seconds, which is about normal. Thank you both for the suggestion. I'll be using it again. Best wishes Keith
