Strange problems resolving names
Here it was what I get on my computer directly connected to the dns. praise@praisenet:~> host irc.tin.it ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached Strangely, if I try the same from a computer behind it, it works properly. I have tried to turn of my firewall, with no luck. I have also tried to disconnect and reconnect (I am using rp-pppoe) with nor esult. What else could I do? I am using Suse 8 Praise

Well network trouble shooting is very methodical. You start closest to you and move out. First make sure yoru network is up and running. Use ifconfig. You should have lo, local also a eth0 (nic card) and if yoru using dsl ppp0 Check your network address for your ethernet card and also yoru subnet. Try pinging another system locallly and visa versa. If that works try pinging an IP address on the web. If that works ping a domain. Eg yahoo.com. If that doesn't work they your dns config is wrong. That should be a start.

I could access the web from machines masqueraded by that pc. By the way everything is fine now, and names resolve. I did nothing!!! I suppose there was a momentary failure with my ISP and with some names (not all). Praise
