Re: [SLE] Fundamental differences
Hi, ** It WASN'T "invented," but this is WAY OFF TOPIC, folks. Apologies -- theological arguments *are* way OT :-P - I posted this before reading the 'pissed off with this thread' messages further on. The mail comes in bunches here because the mail server is crapped up. (Lotus Notes) Perhaps we should have a chat/advocacy list for this kind of stuff aka FreeBSD / OpenBSD lists anyway? It'd keep it out of the genuine questions. Any ideas from anyone at SuSE here??? I operate a Linux mail/web server (http://www.blu.org - Boston Linux and Unix) that provides services to several other user groups (mostly former Boston Computer Society groups). We have recently shut off our ftp and telnet access. Several of our user group webmasters are either Windows or Mac users. I would like to be able to provide some good advice to our Windows based webmasters as to which Windows SSH clients are decent (such as SecureCRT), and how they can transfer files. (At least one of them is going to install Linux this wee). I also do not want to require them to buy any software. The main issue is the transfer of files. The guys I am concerned about are really not all that computer literate. -- Jerry Feldman Contractor, eInfrastructure Partner Engineering 508-467-4315 http://www.testdrive.compaq.com/linux/ Compaq Computer Corp. 200 Forest Street MRO1-3/F1 Marlboro, Ma. 01752 -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
Say that would be kinda neat. A list for general Linux discussion to keep the main list with questions, etc. I'd signup. :-) -Tim ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. There has been a number of post on the subject of splitting this list. Up till now I have, like most, been on the 'DEFINITELY NO' side. - BUT - I have now changed sides due to SOME recent threads. (THIS ONE IN PARTICULAR - There have been approx. 95 posts and barely a technical issue raised) Reason ====== I like many are monitoring this list on our company network. Thus sending alot of none technical stuff is a waste of very valuable band width. I have justified my usage on the fact that I'm breaking new ground with Linux (Everybody else uses MS ) and that I can learn alot from monitoring the list as well as getting answers to my problems. They can see that there is good possibilities but also as customers come on the same feed unnecessary traffic could out weight the advantages (As far as the management are concerned). I'm not saying that this particular thread should not exist but it, and alike threads, should be separated out. I personally would subscribe to a 'discussion thread' but it would be at home where I can judge if I want to continue or not. While I'm on my soapbox!! Some contributors to the list have been flamed for sending in there submissions in HTML/Rich Text. How about signatures?? Surly one line is sufficient with your name and possibly your e-mail address. (Where relevant, packup your egos ) Most people are not interested in what you do or where you work!!! They are interested in your PROBLEMS and YOUR ANSWERS. SOUND TECHNICAL ADVISE WILL SAY IT ALL ====================================== And as for those logos, that in most cases do not display correctly as they have re-formatted. Let us use all this valuable band width to get the technical information across to the people who need it and who are Linux's future. I trust this will not ruffle to many feathers.
