Hi Can anyone tell me how to log into linux as root from telnet? I have set ROOT_LOGIN_REMOTE=yes in /etc/rc.config But it still doesnt seem to work. Logging in as a user is however no problem. to log in as root is very dangerous. You should do everything you can to make sure that root can not log in through telnet. If you want to act as root during a telnet session you should log in as a normal user and then type in: "su -" You will be prompted for your root password after you provide it you can functionas the root user. When you are finished doing root task you should exit as root. On Thu, 16 Mar 2000, Paul Evans wrote:

The best option: log in as a user with your telnet session. After that you
can use the commando "su" and give the root-password to log in as root.
2nd best option: edit /etc/securetty to include some telnet-tty's (ttyp0,
ttyp1 or something like that, I'm not sure about the exact name)

As mention by others, telnet with root is NOT advisable. Anyway, when you set ROOT_LOGIN_REMOTE=yes, yast will modify 2 files, /etc/pam.d/login and /etc/pam.d/rlogin. In these 2 files, the line "auth required /lib/security/pam_securetty.so" is comment out. With these comment out, you will be able to telnet in as root. PLEASE do not comment out these lines under any circumstances. Cheer, Wayne Paul Evans wrote:
