Should I upgrade to X4.1.0 and KDE 2.2?
I've been trying to tell from the messages floating around here whether I ought to upgrade from my current X4.0.3 and KDE 2.1.2 to the newer X4.1.0 and KDE 2.2. I don't want to be on the "bleeding edge"; stability and reliability (weren't those supposed to be reasons for using Linux rather than Windows?) matter to me more than having a system that rocks to the max. I also don't want to take a big chance on bringing my system down entirely as a result of an attempt to upgrade it, particularly when the success of the upgrade depends on obscurely documented tweaks. But I also realize that some new versions actually enhance stability and fix bugs as well as provide useful improvements in functionality and performance. For instance, I've generally had good success with kernel upgrades. So what do folks here recommend? Paul

Well, to my knowledge, and to that of www.kde.org, KDE2.2 isn't out yet, so I'd wait. -- Rachel
My god, I'm still using KDE 2.0.1. What packages did you dl to upgrade to 2.1.2, isn't it support, then libs, etc. and after words (or before hand) did you have to put back ups back into place? Was there any noticible improvement afterwards and what pitfalls might I wish to avoid. Any help would be appreciated. TIA. Curtis :) On Sunday 17 June 2001 09:33 pm, Paul Abrahams wrote:

Actually kde is only up to 2.1.1 , the 2.1.2 is the libraries only. jack

jack And IMO 2.1.1 was definitely worth the upgrade (error free upgrade it was too).

I think I saw something here about a 2.2 beta for KDE. Paul
The beta for 2.2 will be announced on the 2nd of july. Nash On Monday 18 June 2001 16:26, you wrote:

I used the packages I picked up from the KDE section on the SuSE support site. Don't remember which ones, though, except that I got qt-experimental rather than qt. An advantage of getting stuff from SuSE rather than from kde.org is that it comes in the form of rpm's that are easier to keep track of. I think I heard that Lenz Grimmer has a howto on creating SuSE-compatible rpm's from .tgz files, available via the "people" page on the SuSE website, but I've never gotten around to checking it out.

I vaguely remember that it solved a couple of problems, but I can no longer tell you what they were. The upgrade did go quite smoothly. Paul
