[opensuse] Leap 42.1 in a Windows 8 Hosted Virtual Box - lots of flicker
All, This may be a pure Windows 8 / VB issue and nothing to do with Linux/openSUSE, but I need to start somewhere. I have a Windows 8.1 PC with 48 GB or RAM. I thought I would try out Leap in a Virtualbox VM on that machine. I haven't worked much with VB before so I could have something obvious wrong. I almost always Remote Desktop into the Windows 8.1 box from a Windows 7 laptop with 2 monitors. The video has been stable on both monitors. When I start up VB/Leap it is stable as long as I keep VB on the first monitor. As soon as I move it to the 2nd monitor, that monitor starts getting flacky. Lots of flickering and even the screen going blank. I've tried 2 different monitors connected to the laptop. I haven't done any troubleshooting or video driver changing yet. Ideas? fyi: If I sit at the PC running VB, there is no flicker, but it only has one monitor connected. Resolved
All,
Further use of the client laptop showed the problem was not unique to
running VirtualBox, but VirtualBox seemed to induce the most
consistent bad behavior.
The issue turned out to be that the Window 7 laptop PC where I was
running Remote Desktop from was reconfigured over Thanksgiving and
newly connected to the monitor via a DisplayPort to VGA adapter
(Apparently my digital cable was needed elsewhere and it was assumed
VGA would be fine for me).
Switching to HDMI resolved the issue. I don't know why, but I find it
surprising. I'm just glad I noticed the wrong cable was in use and
got a new DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, and further that it fixed the
problem.
