[opensuse] Software updater orb
This morning when I got up the orb was missing in the panel. I then looked with YaST to see if my installaton sources were still intact and they were. A reboot brought the orb back. When I click on it a popup appears and says that zmd is not running. Hovering over it says there are no software updates available. Hi Bob, This happened to me in the last day or so, I /think/ because an update to the updater system was applied the night before. I got it working again, as follows: -> right-clicked the "orb" and quit it -> opened a shell and su'd to root -> ran an 'rczmd status' (returned "dead") -> ran 'rczmd restart' -> ran an 'rczmd status' (returned "running") -> launched the "orb" again from the menu via "System > Configuration > Update Software" I think I had to repeat this sequence twice, for unknown reasons, for it to 'stick' in running mode. hth & regards, Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks Carl, that did the trick although slight differences in the results. Here is what my screen looked like. # rczmd status Checking for ZENworks Management Daemon: running # rczmd restart Shutting down ZENworks Management Daemon done Starting ZENworks Management Daemon done # rczmd status Checking for ZENworks Management Daemon: running # rczmd restart Shutting down ZENworks Management Daemon failed done # rczmd status Checking for ZENworks Management Daemon: running # rczmd restart Shutting down ZENworks Management Daemon failed done At this point I went ahead and did: System > Configuration > Update Software" as you suggested. That brought on the ORB and allowed the success of the following. The ORB offered 10-new updates which included zypper. # rczmd status Checking for ZENworks Management Daemon: running # rczmd restart Shutting down ZENworks Management Daemon done Starting ZENworks Management Daemon -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You're welcome... I'm glad it worked! :-) I think you might need to repeat the procedure again after zypper is updated. I might be mistaken, but I /think/ the updater "orb" stumbled afterwards. regards, Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

So do I Carl. I've got the same prob in my new 10.2 install. I did the last set of updates and ZMD seems not to be running. There are still a few gotcha's in ZMD it seems. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Mike and happy new year! :-) I don't think it's as much a problem with zmd as it was with the last set of updates to it. After a couple of 'restarts' it seems to be running fine at this end (knock on wood!) regards, Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thank you, and the same to you and yours.

Well when I reboot into it later tonight, I'll rap my head a few times and try the rczmd restart method, I've all but given up on ZMD on the 10.1 install on my son's laptop. BTW, I noted in his (op's) followup that he had errors with the restart switch. Possibly this is one of those status|start|stop type scripts. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Then after doing a refresh from the Orb this came up. Software Updater - Error System.InvalidOperationException: List has changed. Logging out then logging in would have most likely done the trick, there's no magic in rebooting, unless you're on ms windoze.

How about: chkconfig -a novell-zmd; rczmd start Joe -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
