[SLE] Suse 6.3: Major problems with Kscd
First, many thanks to those who have already suggested solutions, but I'm still having sever problems with Kscd. Here's what's happening: whenever I start Kscd I get the message in the Kscd window that the disc has been ejected, even when there is a disc in the caddy. The disc is unplayable. I know that the CD-ROM can read data discs (I can mount and read data discs). I also know that the sound is working - I can play midi files (using Kmid and Kmidi) and wav files and hte sounds in the Kde environment work fine. Here's what I've tried so far: * deleting the file ~/.kde/share/config/kscdrc * swapping out the CD-ROM * using a different kernel * recompiling the kdemultimedia package * changing /dev/cdrom to /dev/hdc in the kdsc options menu None of the above has altered the behaviour of kdsc. Here's the system: PII 300 Mhz ASUS Motherboard Wearness ATAPI CD-ROM Creative Labs AWE-64 GOld soundcard OSS sound drivers (latest version from the 4-front website) Suse 6.3 (kernel 2.2.13) (I've tried both the standard and EIDE kernels) Now, all of this used to work just fine with Suse 6.2 and what with the other problems that have arisen with this upgrade I am really starting to regret upgrading to Suse 6.3 (I've been using Suse since 5.2). I've looked at the source code for Kscd and it appears that the "ejected" message is used a great deal when Kscd is unable to retrieve the status of the CD-ROM. So I suspect that something is going wrong in the communication between the CD-ROM and Kscd. If anyone has any further suggestions for a solution I'd be extremely happy (dare one say elated) to hear them. Otherwise I'll have to mail in to the Suse and KDE bug lists. Adrian Adrian Burd, Dpt. I can't get my cd player to play music cds. Most cd player applications just terminate as soon as I start them. Some of them leave error messages, as follows: When I try to use the Workman cd player, the Workman window flashes up just long enough for me to read the message, "No CD in drive." An error message then appears on the command line: /dev/cdrom: No such device The kscd CD player opens with a message box that says "CDROM read or access error. Please make sure you have access permissions to: /dev/cdrom". I've modified the permissions on /dev/cdrom, and they seem liberal enough to me: ls -l /dev/cdrom returns lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 6 Nov 17 13:43 /dev/cdrom -> sonycd likewise, ls -l /dev/sonycd gives me brwxr-xr-x 1 root disk 15,0 Jul 22 1999 /dev/sonycd I know not to mount the drive before trying to run a cd player application, there is a CD in the drive, and my CD channel is unmuted. I'm running SuSE 6.2, and I have a Sony IDE DDU220E06 DVD-ROM drive. I'm using a SoundBlaster PCI128 sound card with Alsa 5.2 drivers. I don't think it's a sound driver problem, sound works just fine otherwise. Does anyone have any ideas on this? I just put 6.3 on my laptop, and get the same thing: /dev/dsp not found /dev/cdrom not found I copied the same conf.modules that worked in Suse 6.2. (modules.conf) I have modified permissions. also. Thanks, I was too embaerrassed to be the first to ask. Fraser Hanson wrote:

It seems that this is a problem that affects only a few systems. So far I've not found a solution, but strongly suspect that Suse (or someonelse) has messed up on the kernel configuration. On delving deeper I discovered (with the help of someone more knowledgeable about such things as I) that I was getting ioctl errors and when these were deciphered we discovered that this was because something that should have been in the kernel was not. I'll be downloading 2.2.14 and compiling it tonight - you might want to try the same. As an aside, many thanks to those who pitched in with suggestions - sadly none of them solved the problem but hopefully the new kernel will. Hello Fraser, The CDROM player you are using is a sony but uses an IDE interface. /dev/cdrom should be linked to probably /dev/hdb. Check /etc/fstab which is setup by Yast. This probably has the correct device for /cdrom. /dev/sony is for accessing a cdrom that is connected on the soundcard with a sony interface. Older cards and cdplayers use them. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! That worked perfectly! I've been trying to solve this stupid problem for 3 months, off and on. I can't believe the solution was so simple! Thank you, --Fraser Hanson On Thu, 10 Feb 2000, Arjen Runsink wrote:
