[opensuse] Firefox - Weather Page Won't Work, I need to Solve This.
Listmates, Currently on multiple 11.0 installs, both 32-bit and 64-bit systems, the following weather RADAR page will not work. I have worked with this page, and may will recall prior discussion on the list about it, but I now need to make a concerted effort to see if I can identify why the page won't work and fix it. Not the least of which is because this page is used for flight planning, which has significant implications. The problem I have is that my knowledge of how java applets are loaded and displayed is not near what is needed to determine what is happening in this case. So I need help from the gurus here. Previously, the 32-bit version would work and the 64-bit version would fail. Now both versions on openSuSE 11.0 fail in firefox. (It also fails in 11.1 RC1) The page fails in opera, but I know that is because there is no java configured in the opera preferences. (I still can't figure out what java to put there). However, the page works fine in konqueror. (The issue is why wont it work on Firefox on openSuSE) The page in question is: http://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid=SHV&product=N0R&overlay=11101111&loop=yes A wireshark capture with all details is available here: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/screenshots/moz/wireshark-SHV-RADAR.bz2 The static page works fine in all browsers: http://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid=shv&product=N0R&overlay=11101111&loop=no From what I can tell, the RADAR loop is called with the following: javascript:newpage('SHV','N0R',1) So the problem is not with a 'page' per se, but with an 'applet'. So the question is why won't this applet run with firefox. The firefox version I have installed on 11.0 is: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.0.4) Gecko/2008103100 SUSE/3.0.4-3.1 Firefox/3.0.4 From the rpm: MozillaFirefox-3.0.4-3.1. The mozilla packages installed on the system are: 11:40 alchemy:~> rpm -qa | grep zilla libgluezilla0-1.9.1-17.1 mozilla-nspr-32bit-4.7.1-18.2 mozilla-nss-3.12.0-23.2 mozilla-nss-32bit-3.12.0-23.2 mozilla-xulrunner181-32bit-1.8.1.18-0.1 MozillaFirefox-3.0.4-3.1 mozilla-xulrunner190-1.9.0.4-2.1 mozilla-nspr-4.7.1-18.2 MozillaThunderbird-2.0.0.18-1.1 mozilla-xulrunner181-1.8.1.18-0.1 mozilla-xulrunner190-gnomevfs-1.9.0.4-2.1 The java packages installed are: java-1_6_0-sun-demo-1.6.0.u7-1.3 java-1_6_0-openjdk-1.2_b09-19.3 java-1_6_0-sun-jdbc-1.6.0.u7-1.3 java-1_5_0-gcj-compat-devel-1.5.0.0-105.1 java-1_6_0-sun-1.6.0.u7-1.3 java-1_5_0-gcj-compat-1.5.0.0-105.1 java-1_6_0-openjdk-demo-1.2_b09-19.3 java-1_6_0-sun-devel-1.6.0.u7-1.3 java-1_6_0-sun-alsa-1.6.0.u7-1.3 java-1_6_0-openjdk-devel-1.2_b09-19.3 java-1_6_0-openjdk-javadoc-1.2_b09-19.3 If I can at least determine exactly what the problem is, I can continue working the problem from that angle. Currently, I don't know whether this is an openSuSE bug or a mozilla bug, but I do know opening an novell.bugzilla report would be worthless (CLOSED INVALID) unless I can specifically show where the bug is. Thank you in advance for any additional help you can give to determine why this problem is occurring. Hopefully, we can get it fixed and working. If I can provide additional information, please just let me know. -- David C. Great thought: I have nothing about java in about:plugins at all. However, I have several entries in about:config, but I'm not sure they are right: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/screenshots/moz/java-pluggins-not-found....

Hmm., I haven't installed anything funny. What is GCJ and where does it come from? I wonder where it got installed? No, it has to be listed in about:plugins. It is usually a missing symlink. If you have played with Java installs, run "update-alternatives", and restart firefox. Mmmm... not too long ago they were in /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/. Not now :-?
