... or is SuSE Linux 8.1 more "temperamental" than previous versions? I realise I'm not an expert by any means and that I find Linux difficult to adjust to but the new SuSE Linux 8.1 doesn't work on the first menu option on very many machines I've tried, the install feels *painfully* slow and none of the install options appear to work on my quad CPU Compaq Proliant 5000 (P/Pro 200 x 4) and then when it runs it is very slow to boot and jerky to use (and that's on a P4/1.7). That said I installed it on one machine (a Compaq Deskpro PIII/800) and it ran perfectly fine! I mean sure it could be me but I was very excited about getting it (I was planning 8.1 to be my big break away from Windows) and now I'm not enthusiastic it at all! James C. Not here, v. steady, though one or two odd locks until I updated the kernel.

About half the time for Win98 on any machine I have tried.
and none of the install options appear to work on my quad CPU Compaq Proliant 5000 (P/Pro 200 x 4)
Can't address that one, I don't have a multiprocessor machine.

Is the DMA working right on the disk? With DMA100 it ought to zip along. Does on mine with same CPU.

Put kde3.1 on it and do all the updates. You'll love it. I only boot Windows now for the occasional game, and that wouldn't really be necessary if I was less idle in following up Linux 3d games. Hasn't happened since last October, either. -- Fergus Wilde Chetham's Library Long Millgate Manchester M3 1SB Tel: +44 161 834 7961 Fax: +44 161 839 5797 http://www.chethams.org.uk

Painfully slow install? My hardware differs from yours but I have a AMD Athlon 1.1Ghz and the install went fairly quick for me less than 20 min. But I do not have a multi processor computer either. Jerky in what way? On the same machine above, it runs very well. Of course running a lighter weight window manager will help here. But I'm using KDE and it doesn't feel very jerky.

Sorry to hear that. I have had my fair share of issues too. One day I hope that I can do everything under Linux. I have Windows installed so I can play a few games that I enjoy that cannot run under linux or there is no equivelant. I am using a Proliant 6000 with simular setup. I have 8.0 pro installed and don't remember having problems. Are you using scsi disks? This may narrow thigs down a bit for other folks to help solve your problem. Also keep in mind that you do have an older/slower machine that may also have older slower scsi disks which will make the install go very slow. It doesn't use all of the cpu's until after a reboot with the smp kernel. -- Ken Schneider Senior UNIX Administrator Network Administrator kschneider@rtsx.com

Please, be more specific, e.g. provide the installation time. Note that the installation is done via the non-SMP kernel, the other 3 CPUs are not used. If you don't like the performance then: (1) upgrade to the latest stable version (kernel, applications, ...), (2) benchmark the system, (3) report the values. A single number tells more than several paragraphs full of complaints. -- Alexandr.Malusek@imv.liu.se

Not in my experience. I've had similar problems to the ones you mentioned (I think that was 7.something). I put it down to dodgy CD / DVD. Jethro
