Hi.
How can I set up say Gaim for instance, too boot up when the system boost up here.
SuSE 9.1 Pro. The easiest way is to use the KDE control center: Select KDE Components/Session Manager Then "On Login" click on "Restore Manually saved session". Then, set up your session the way you want, and on the KDE menu, select "Save Session".

Why not just drop an icon in the ~/.kde/Autostart folder?

Make a symlink to the program in ~/.kde/Autostart

If you are using KDE, just open up the ~/.kde/Autostart folder, and
make a link to the application there (you can also just drag-and-drop
one from the K-menu).
You can also use the session manager to achieve this. First, open the
Control Center. Then go to KDE Components > Session Manager. Select
"Restore Manually Saved Session." Then, open all the programs that
you want to launch at KDE startup. Open the K-menu, and select "save
session". All those programs should autostart now.
If you are using Gnome, there are similar facilities, although I don't
know them off-hand.

Sorry, session management may be confusing if you have not seen it before.
Basically, KDE will take a "snapshot" of all the programs currently running,
and restore those programs (as best it can) next time it is started.
By default,
it does this automatically, saving the open programs snapshot at
log-out. I find
this annoying. I like to set the programs I want open, and have those
open at start-up, not the ones I may have been using last time I
logged-out. That is why I choose the option to "restore manually
saved session". Thay way I set things up like I want them, and then
just save it.
So, for example, if you want GAIM and XMMS to open automatically, just
run those programs, and then select "save session" in the k-menu
(which will only be available if you have configured 'restore manually
saved session'). Next time KDE starts, they will open on desktop 1.
Note that not all programs seem to work well with session management,
and you have the best luck with KDE apps. For maximum control, I
would use the Autostart folder. (open konqueror, and put
"~/.kde/Autostart/" in the location bar. Then drag and drop from the
k-menu, telling it to make a copy, or make a new "link to application"
by right-clicking. ["create new" > "file" > "Link to
Application..."]).
hope this helps....

No problem Kirk. Thanks for adding this nice mail to my query.

I see you point clear.

Very well, I can follow you.

Also understood. Was the way I got it to work :-)

Hi James.
How is that to be done ?.
Open your home directory in KDE Make sure "Show Hidden Files" is enabled under "View" Open the .kde directory Find an icon from an app somewhere, and drag it to the Autostart directory, selecting "Link here". Next time you start KDE, anything that's in the Autostart directory should start automagically.
