In most cases it is rather safe, but in some cases it is not. Depends on which version of glibc-2.0 the binaries are linked against and which functions from libc are used. [BTW: IIRC, SuSE-7.0 was glibc-2.1 based. This gives a huge difference, because unlike running glibc-2.0 linked binaries, running glibc-2.1-based binaries under glibc-2.2 is almost 100% safe.]
Is recomilation required or just recommended? It's not required, but it's safer to do so - I would recommend it.
