Hi all, A friend of mine has installed SuSE 8.1 via FTP, and he can not configure the grphic card, a Radeon 8500 LE. He has an AMD Athlon 2000+ based PC with 256MB RAM and a HDa on 80GB and one at 40GB as the second mounted as slave. I tried to help him, but without success. The Yast2 recognize the card as Radeon QL and I've changed it to LE too but no luck. Am I missing something, or the card is not supported? On the SuSE site there is mentioned Radeon to be supported by SuSE! Can somebody point me to the right direction? TIA Vidor

You can find some drivers at http://mirror.ati.com/support/driver.html . They work fine with my 8500 Olle

There is a working ATI driver now, written by Tungsten Graphics. It works quite well, I've used it to watch DVD, play quake3 and Return to Castle Wolfenstein. The only drawback is that it requires X 4.2.99, so you have to download and compile the entire X distribution.

So where do I find X 4.2.99 and the ATI driver? I've tried at xfree86.org and a mirror site. Olle

The Tungsten ati driver can be found at http://dri.sourceforge.net/snapshots/bleeding-edge/ It's the "r200" driver Beware it is still beta "bleeding edge". All I can say is that I installed the version dated nov 11 and it worked pretty well. At least I couldn't find any bugs. YMMV For X 4.2.99, go to xfre86.org and follow their instructions for checking out from cvs. Be careful when installing though. Compiling was easy enough, but to get the installation correct is a bit of a PITA Anders

If SuSE recognized your friends card it should have picked the right driver for it, considering there's only one driver that comes with X for the Radeon series cards. Did you make sure your friend chose the right monitor model for his setup and that it is using the right refresh rates? Have you considered making up an X11Config by hand? It'll be a lot easier than compiling X from source. Don
Hi Don,
The monitor model was choosed by SuSE too and did not worked.
I tried to change to the right monitor by choosing it from the list,
(Hansol) 90P - I think - but no X11 started with it.
Yes I tried to configure X11 with xfconfig, but the results was the same.
With Sax2 couldn't do anything, it doesn't start... :-(
Maybe I'll try to make up an X11Config by hand as you suggest :-)
Thanks for all help I've got...
Vidor

To all SuSE gurus,
I just picked up a Radeon 8500 (evil master II Pro by power color) and
SuSE8.1 installed it as R200QL.
I don't have the slightest idea on how to compile X11Config "by hand" would
some be so kind as to give me a few pointers to get be started.
For example
What is the X11Config source_file called ?
What are required librairies?
What is the basic procedure ?
I imagine that it must be something like ...
tar xvf source_file
./configure
make
Thanks in advance

These drivers are the only drivers that work with the 8500 series. I've not tried them because I've got the 7500 series, but I've heard they work fine. I don't believe XFree86 has very good support if it supports this card at all. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe.. I tell you what you should see.

ATI does not produce the drivers for linux. I've got a Radeon LE and on my previous RedHat install I didn't have the 3d drivers installed. Where can you get these and/or who writes them? I'm anxious to give that Unreal 2k3 demo another shot.

Well, I hate to break it to you. But unless the U2k3 demo has changed..it only supports nVidia's drivers or for ATI you would have to use XiG's Accelerated X. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe..
