Why no rich-text cutting and pasting between Linux apps?
I was wondering whether there were any reasons _in principle_ why Linux desktop environments should only allow for cutting and pasting between applications in plain text. After all, Windows and Mac users have long been able to paste in rich-text and images wherever the recipient application is able to support respective mime-types. Is this purely a case of the current toolkits' inadequacy, or does the problem go deeper into X11R6 standards? Michael

Before I get into explaining this, let's make one thing clear; they're not "Linux" apps, they're "X" apps, at the least. Big difference.

The interoperability between KDE, GNOME, and other "DE" or toolkit-specific applications comes into play first of all. The KDE and GNOME teams are working on this, but work is slow. I've seen some KDE and GNOME applications, respectively, that do the preformatted text-copy-thingie, and I personally found it quite annoying; I don't think I'm a minority, either. If I want something formatted a certain way, I'll do it myself, thank you very much. I can't recall *which* applications do it, probably because I ceased to use these applications once this "feature" exposed itself. It's not universal, at any rate. ===== -- -=|JP|=- Hit me! - http://www.xanga.com/cowboydren/ Jon Pennington | Debian 2.3 -o) cowboydren @ yahoo . com | Auto Enthusiast /\\ Kansas City, MO, USA | ICQ UIN 69 67 29 31 _\_V __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? OK, so not richtext or graphics in X (highlight/middle-button) but how about with the K clipboard (^C/^V)? I've found behaviour of this fairly inconsistent, but then most of this work was with Netscape, which is a mess. On Tuesday 30 October 2001 15:46, you wrote:
