Its called apcupsd and has been on SUSE since 7.3 at least. Once installed you need to configure it primarily for UPS type, cable type and communication port. All documentation ends up in /usr/share/doc/packages. My APC Back-Ups Pro 420 is connected via serial. Works great. Stan

I can second that apcupsd is working goood from 8.0 up to 9.0 here at work for me with couple different apc ups's. do not have the model numbers off

you can use NUT (Network UPS Tools), it is present in the SuSE 8.1 (1.2.x ) or see http://eu1.networkupstools.org/ for more informations and http://eu1.networkupstools.org/compat/stable.html for UPS hardware compatibility list (ver : 1.4.1) you can also use Personal Solution-Pac with MGE UPS, that is very easy to install an use : http://www.mgeups.com/download/soft/splist.htm#PSP Vincent

I have an APS 350 which has the connection but I dont know of anyone who has that working with Linux. It would be nice to know if that unit will work with the ups software. When i first installed it I couldnt find anything on that particular equipment. Richard

Have you tried either apcupsd or nut software? Both are on SUSE DVD/CDs. Does the APS 350 (did you mean APC?) have serial or usb or ethernet connections? The nut software has a long list of manufacturers and models of ups systems. Check the URLs from Vincent's posts. Stan

My APC 350 has the usb connection. I had tried the apcupd when I first got the thing about a year ago and could not get it to work with my ps. Probably me but I got sidetracked and went to other things. The important thing is the UPS has saved me several times when we had a thunderstorm coming through. I put them on a batch of computers I maintain and havent had but one callout since. Nice things to have on a work/office machine that stays on all the time.

Thanks, I'll give them a look and see if I can get one of them working. RA

Not quite an answer to the question as asked, but a while ago I bought
a Belkin Gold Pro 650 UPS, which had a driver for Linux (and other
Unix & freeBSD) on the CDROM.
I have found it to work well.
I have it connected to one machine via the serial port. After 5 minutes
of power-out (not uncommon where I live) the machine it is connected to
shuts down. Meanwhile, this machine has sent email messages to the other
machines on my LAN which are monitored every minute by cron jobs. When
one of these is received by another machine, it too shuts down. After
time for all this to happen, the UPS itself switches off.
It took a little while to figure out how to coordinate all this, but
now it works smoothly.
I hope this is useful.
Ted.

I have a Liebert GXT1000MT-230 and a GXT700MT-230 in use here. http://www.liebert.com for the packages and details of cable pinouts. There is a commandline tool and a GUI version, both work fine. They also gave me an additional free license, so I could control 2 PC's, I have to ask them again as I lost the hard drive with the license. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... What great info. I should have known there is a good way to do this in Linux! Now, I'm off to get a decent UPS. Thanks to all, and to Vince for the good info and links. I did come across this as well today. Actually I stumbled across it reading a link from the OT list.... A good UPS How To by Eric Raymond.... http://tldp.org/HOWTO/UPS-HOWTO/ Thanks again, Jim Flanagan On Monday 01 March 2004 16:30, Sid Boyce wrote:
