I have just downloaded the k_deflt-2.4.21-168i586.rpm for my SuSE 8.1. I would install it using these commands: rpm -Uhv --nodeps --force <kernel> then mk_initrd Is it right? I downloaded the source too (in tarball format). How can I install it? Better, where can I find any documentation? Thnak you. emilio

You can install the kernel with rpm -Uvh kernel.rpm /sbin/mk_initrd You shouldn't need --nodeps or --force. Why not download the kernel-source rpm? If you have the tarball, though, you should decompress it into /usr/src and then create a symbolic link, ie: cd /usr/src tar -xvjf /path/to/kernel-source.tar.bz2 ln -sf linux-2.4.21-168 linux YaST won't know that you've installed it though, as it relies on the rpm database.
