suse 8.1 booting problem
I have suse 8.1 installed on a machine. Had it up an running for several months now. was off thursday/ friday last week. came in this morning an the server was not accessible from netwokr nor from local promt. So i rebooted the machine an I get this error message on screen after reboot: init: version 2.02 booting init: id 1 respawning to fast disable for 5 minutes init: id 3 respawning to fast disable for 5 minutes init: id 2 respawning to fast disable for 5 minutes init: id 4 respawning to fast disable for 5 minutes init: id 5 respawning to fast disable for 5 minutes init: id 6 respawning to fast disable for 5 minutes no more processes left in this runlevel. it waits 5 minutes an give these same errors again. anyone know that this means an if so what I can do to get the system up at least to copy some from from the hard drive in a couple directories to backup. It was not a production server thankfuly, just my test one, but i still have some stuff I would love to copy off of the drive to put back on when i get it back up an running again. jack

That's odd, I had the same thing happen to me about 3 weeks ago. I resorted to putting my cd backup in, and just restoring. Never did figure it out. I did boot from a rescue disk and looked at /var/log/messages but there was no clue. I just guessed a lib got messed up somewhere. It did the same thing when I tried to boot with "init=/bin/sh". I looked at it timewise. Restoring from backup was 30 minutes, while trying to track it down and fix it would be alot longer. :-) Your best bet is to boot with the install cd, and look at /var/log/messages. You then can try to find where the error is. There is an option somewhere in the setup to repair an existing install. -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation
