/etc/inittab looks ok, but I tried to copy an old one to /etc/inittab with the same result.
The lost+found directory is clean, Could there be anything else?
If the last message you see is "mounted root filesystem" and you do NOT see "Init version blah booting" it means the kernel cannot execute init. Reasons: The kernel lacks ELF binary support, the shared libs are trashed (check the /lib directory). Has /sbin/init proper permissions?
