[opensuse] Motherboard suggestions for AMD 64 bit
I'm planning to build my own development workstation and want to use an AMD dual 64 bit processor. I'm currently trying to select a motherboard for use with openSUSE 10.2 (-64) From general product reviews I liked the look of the Asus M2N32 WS Pro, but I've found the archive messages here about poor Asus support for Linux. The opensuse compatability database seems rather restricted / out of date in terms of the boards covered (but maybe that really is the choice available). What Mobos would people recommend? I have two AMD64x2 machine built on different Asus mobos, and on AMD64 on an Asus mobo. Mainly with no trouble; one machine is a little odd, ==John ffitch -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I'm using a Gigabyte GA-M55plus-S3G/2.1 Athlon 64 X2 4600+ AM2, 2G DDR2 800Mhz I don't recall having any issues installing 10.2. It is running 64-bit fine. That looks very good from the asus website, especially the cooling concept imho is convincing. As a slight disadvantage, the memory is limited to 8GB, while comparable Gigabyte Boards offer 16GB max. I never had bad experiences with Asus boards. Just had first hand experience with bad Asus Linux support in regard to Laptops. In consequence, I will always happily buy another motherboard from Asus, but never ever will buy a Laptop, if Linux is the intended OS. regards Eberhard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

AMD AM2 Athlon 64 x 2 Dual Core 4200 + ASUS AM2 M2N8-VMX Motherboard # Palit 7600GT 256M PCIe ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Hi, should you have lower 3D requirements, you could also use the onboard nvida GForce 6100 for the time being and upgrade later (for less), should your requirements go up.
DDR2 1 GB 677MHz RAM x 2 = 2 GIG RAM* OR DDR2 512MB 677 RAM X 2 = 1 GIG RAM* For the integrated NVidia and also in any other case ;-) I would recommend to go for 2 GIG.

My thanks to all the advice received on this thread. For the record, I've built the following: AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ mobo: GIGABYTE GA-M55S-S3 4GB of Kingston DDR2 667MHz/PC2-5300 ECC (2 matched 2GB pairs) 3 * 500GB Western Digital Caviar SE16 SATA II 300 7200rpm 16MB cache configured as software RAID 5, giving around 930Gb under '/' Greaphics: Leadtek PX7300 GS (I only look at text) The biggest design problem turned out to be to find a case with enough 5 1/4" drive capacity (I need 2*DVD, floppy, the above 3 + other drives in the future). For anyone interested the Antek Nine Hundred has space for 10 such drives! PS: Antek TRUEPOWER TRIO 550W (nice big fan on top). It's now all up-and-running under openSUSE 10.2 - mostly (see another thread). Chris Haynes On Thursday, June 14, 2007 at 9:29:43 AM, Eberhard Roloff wrote:
