Re: [SLE] ACPI configuration or return to apmd
Problem not solved yet ....... At the lilo prompt acpi=off apm=on produces the desired configuration. Now to make it permanent. I have looked at the YaST bootloader configuration tool but before messing it up....what exactly do I need to edit ? I assume that the change has to go in at "section options". What exactly needs to be done ? Refering to the SuSE Manual for lilo .....the example states append="mcd=0x300,10" Using YaST I have tried acpi=off apm=on "acpi=off apm=on" "acpi=off","apm=on" none has worked. What is the correct syntax, please ? -- John Robert Sweet wrote:
In /boot/grub/menu.1st add to the kernel line:
acpi=off apm=on
I too have a Dell laptop and that works for me.

add acpi=off apm=on tp the append line of your /etc/lilo.conf or with Yast2, and be sure to run lilo as root afterward (I believe this is done if using Yast2. Just wanted to say that I'm using Grub, I tried that line and variations thereof and still nothing works. I should add that I'm using a PC with a 17" CRT which I've resorted to switching off manually. I wish someone would come up with a solution that really works, because I've just about given up trying.
Success ! I edited the APPEND= line in /etc/lilo.conf but only APPEND= acpi=off worked. i.e. two parameters seems not to be accepted. (The documentation is lousy) I tried various permutation but running the command lilo reported syntax errors on this line. with APPEND= acpi=off and apmd set to run (3 and 5) in the YaST runlevel editor apm is back, the battery is charging and the Klaptop options/icon is working. -- John Eddie wrote:

You need quotes if the argument has any spaces. This from my lilo.conf file: image = /boot/vmlinuz label = linux root = /dev/hda3 # IDE disc 1 partition 3 append = "noapic devfs=mount" In Grub's menu.lst you don't need the quotes but you need to specify all the parameters; lilo gives you root= and vga= for free, and folds in the image name. Here's my example: title Linux 2.4.19 (Custom) root (hd0,2) kernel = /boot/vmlinuz noapic devfs=mount vga=0x343 root=/dev/hda3 (For the sharp-eyed: kernel 2.4.19 knows that the APIC on an Inspiron 4100 is poison, and refuses to turn it on.) Just checked: APPEND = "acpi=off apm=on" works on my Inspiron 4000. APPEND = "noacpi" was accepted but did not work. -- John Jim Carter wrote:
