Odd, I have an SB Live 5.1 Platinum and although it did not work when I
installed Mandrake 8.1, it worked flawlessly after installing SuSE 7.3, just ran
through the normal YaST configuration. Interestingly it's about 10 times louder
than when I boot into Windows. In Windows, I have the device audio controls
maxed, and the Windows volume control maxed and it's still not loud enough. If
I reboot into SuSE, I have to remember to turn the device audio down or the KDE
theme will make the dog howl. And the SuSE audio is at 10%. I'd rather have it
this way though than not being able to crank it.

For those of you with the sound blaster crackling, give this a try . . .
in /etc/rc.config, set START_ALSA="no" and START_ALSA_SEQ="no", then run /sbin/SuSEconfig. Now add the line 'modprobe emu10k1' to /etc/init.d/boot.local to load the sound driver at boot. Reboot and enjoy (hopefully) crackle free audio . . .
I stumbled upon this one, apparently one of the many modules SuSE loads for sound is creating the problem. Following the above steps gets rid of all the fluff, and if your like me, gives you only what you want. This will cause alsa not to run, so if you need that for some reason (or MIDI), perhaps you should ignore this . . . but hey, not like it's hard to undo the steps if it doesn't work as expected. Let me know if it works for you.
