ALSA kernel modules problem
Hi, I am still trying to get sound working with soundblaster and custom compiled kernel 2.4.16 and 2.4.17 from SuSE kernel sources. After compiling and installing ALSA kernel modules v0.511 from alsa-project.org problem with unresolved symbols in emu10k1 module seem to be solved. YaST2 now can configure sound but my speakers are still mute. I have tried different configurations before compiling alsa (support for all sound cards, oss, etc.), but the result is always the same - no sound whatsoever. Sound works with stock SuSE kernel, so it seems I've missed something. Any idea how to solve alsa problem? Thanks in advance Andrei
If you have a SB AWE, you should see all about awesfx rpm (load sound fonts). I have on one PC an old ISA SB AWE and it works completely with Alsa, although on other PC I have an old ISA SB16, and internal midi doesn't work using Alsa.
In /etc/modules.conf:
options snd-card-sbawe snd_awe_port=0x620 snd_csp=1 snd_dma16=5 snd_dma8=0 snd_fm_port=0x388 snd_id=card1 snd_index=0 snd_irq=5 snd_mic_agc=1 snd_mpu_port=0x330 snd_port=0x220

Did you unmute the channels with alsamixer (the channels are muted by default)? If you did try running rcalsasound restart and see if there are any errors in /var/log/messages Regards, Charles -- The box saids Windows XP or better, so I installed Linux
Hi, If you download and compile a plain kernel from kernel.org, you'll get your ALSA working without a pain. I believe that SuSE put in their kernels a lot of extra stuff which is not always copes with custom built modules and patches. Try to use a plain kernel. You won't get that nifty graphical boot up screen (an attraction for M$ addicts) but at least you'll get functionality. Alex -------------------

I have no problems with Herbert's 2.4.17 and ALSA 0.9beta10. I am using a Sblive!. Regards, Charles -- The box saids Windows XP or better, so I installed Linux
