I'm fixing to get a chance to run a dual athlon MP machine here at work for testing purposes. I'hv discovered that tyan is the only motherboard maker left in the dual amd athlon market. Just wondering if anyone is using the tyan tiger MPX s2466-4m motherboard an running suse on it. I'm going first install win2k to see how things go on it then after I get my suse 8.2 disks install an run suse on it. Just looking for anyone who has it running linux an your comments on it. thanks jack malone Network Administrator EAST TEXAS LIGHTHOUSE FOR THE BLIND dba HORIZON INDUSTRIES 903-595-3444 http://www.horizonind.com

Wrong! Check out this one. http://www.msicomputer.com/product/detail_spec/product_detail.asp?model=K7D_... I have one of these at home and have run Win98, Win2K, and Red Hat 7.3 and 9 on it. I love it. I too am eagerly anticipating running SuSE 8.2 on it.

Yes, I have one of these too (at work). I love this one too, and don't see much difference between them. (Well, at work I have twice the RAM and the processors are 50% faster...) I have GeForce 4 4600's at both places. (The one at home is also an MSI.) I have an Adaptec 2940 at home and a 39160 at work. I *have* run SuSE 8.1 on the Asus board, and it was a nightmare to get it going. I have had zero problems getting any and all versions of Red Hat on it. However, something about the 8.1 install choked on my config, and I had to do manual installs with no graphics. (Which I figured out after several attempts.) Also, for some reason, it panic'ed on reboot after the install. I had to do something funky with a kernel parameter to get it to boot into the SMP kernel. (And had to make the change by using the "rescue" function of the install program.) Unfortunately, I don't remember what that was, but I found it online. I tried to install the latest X, KDE, and Gnome on it from SuSE's web site right after I got it running, and it all went to "you know where." I blew it away in favor of RH 9, which has just been a disaster for me. There are too many niggling problems to use it, and I'm just chomping at the bit to try SuSE 8.2 on this box. (I'm running in XP right now.) I expect them to have this install situation fixed with the new version... I hope... The only other thing I will note is that you can't leave the standard boot-from-floppy-cdrom-then-disk thing alone. For some reason, neither board will do this. I have to turn off the ability to boot from the CD in order to boot from disk. This is probably because of the SCSI controllers I'm using. It's a minor annoyance, and I keep expecting them to fix it with BIOS updates, but I don't think it's happened yet. I love the speed and throughput of both boards, though, and would gladly buy either again. dk
Thanks david for the input. I was basing the below statement on what our asi rep told me last week. She told me that tyan was the only one left in the market still producing there board. I knew that asus had one out but they had discontinued them an from the looks of things asi is not able to get any more msi dual athlon boards either. thanks for info jack At 02:41 PM 4/10/2003 -0500, David Krider wrote:

Who is "asi?" I'm worried now that I won't get the BIOS update. Ever. dk
Jack, I am in the process of configuring a system with the tyan mobo right now. The system is dual boot Win2K and SuSE 8.1. I am also upgrading a system with a tyan 2505 mobo. Right now the 2505 has the higher priority but the AMD system is up and running with no problems yet! Robert So far only the On Thursday, April 10, 2003, at 12:15 PM, jack malone wrote:
