CD-RW data are lost -> burned with DirectCD (Win)...
Hi List, I (almost) gave up already to give a helping hand to my dad, who still uses hard-drive-like CD-RWs burned with a bloody old copy of the packet-writing application DirectCD (coming with Easy CD Creator) on a Win98 box. Till now he had no problems as I know, but now just lost one complete CD-RW with _all_ of his photos, documents, etc. From a w2000 machine I attempted to get back his data with about 10 different recovery tools: without any success. Please does anyone have an idea, how could I try to save his data back from this CD-RW under SUSE 9.1?! (= last chance) Thanks a lot, Peli

That garbage software is proprietary and I know of nothing that will read the data. Fred -- "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote." - Benjamin Franklin 1759

If I'm not mistaken, the UDF filesystem is compatible. See if "modprobe udf" and mounting it works. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer =====LINUX ONLY USED HERE=====

Interesting this is brought up. I have yet to be able to use a CDRW as a data backup disk, except in xp. I normally use DVD-RAM cartridges. But I just used directcd on an xp box to format (the long way) and copy oodles of dos files from the xp box to the cdrw. I brought it to work and, using Suse 8.2, I was able to access the CD in a DVD+-R,RW drive using the SR0 device driver with a filesystem of AUTO in the fstab. When I looked at the icon properties, I found the it was set to a filesystem type of UDF. Additionally I could not write to it because "it was set to write-protect" per a kde box after mounting. hope this helps. I want to use CDRW as a means of passing data between my linux boxes at work and my wife's xp box at home, as well as the laptops. If anyone knows how I can write to the CDRWs, I would appreciate the info. John Sowden American Sentry Systems. Inc. 1221 Andersen Drive San Rafael, CA 94901 U.L.
