Hello everyone, This is a strange one - I'm trying to install XP in vmware 4.0.1 on suse 8.2/xd2. I'm pretty sure vmware works (as it installed win2000) properly. when i try to install xp, soon after boot i get a text message saying preparing to install win 98 and then the system dies. what's going on?? thanks, j. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? this is a VMW problem, not SuSE. Have you tried their support, or they have a few support groups on USENET. -- Gary I generally avoid temptation unless I can't resist it.

You've put the wrong CD in the tray. VMware never says "preparing to install...", that message comes from the CD. So you've put a win98 installation CD in.
well, sorry anders but this isn't a very productive
suggestion... ;-)
The answer is no - I put the right CD in (checked and
double checked).
The only thing I can think of is that because these
are toshiba laptop recovery cd's it may first try to
boot with win98, check that its a toshiba laptop and
then boot xp (don't know - pure guess).
it's also not a vmware problem (pretty confident about
that one).
so the question is - has anyone successfully managed
to install xp on vmware with the xp laptop recovery
cd's???
thanks, james.

you need a real xp disk not the recovery disk On Sat, 2003-08-02 at 11:59, James Philp wrote:

James, What I meant was is that since the VMWare usenet groups are concentrated with VMW users, probably with every type of config, you might have some success there.. Just a thought.. <g> It could very well be as you state above.. utilizing the recovery CDs. Regards, -- Gary

In a word, NO. Those things are useless. The only thing you have going for you is the certificate of authenticity on the bottom of the machine. With that you can borrow a friends CD and burn a copy. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

These recovery CD's have the full install directory. And there was a german article how to unlock it. If I remember correctly you should look for the i386 dir on the CD. This should contain the full install directory of WinXP. Hope this helps, Stefan.

I've used VMware for 4 years and not had this problem, a good source would be the VMware site as they have very good support and know more about this package.
thanks, j.
