Hi, I am looking for a good (supported) colour printer and scanner for home use. A Lexmark Z43 is about EURO 160. A Epson Stylus 1650 is about EURO 230. A Hp PCS 750 (multifunction) is about EURO 260. Question: Is a multifunction a good option? Question: Who provides good support? Regards, Armand Deze e-mail en de inhoud daarvan is vertrouwelijk. Hi Armand, If you do not have a lot of spare which you want to deliberately waste, then don't use a multifunction. NOT YET!!! Wait until the SW (hpoj-0.8-23 at the moment) is really working, which means at least 0.9. I have an OfficeJet V30, it was comparatively cheap (EU$255.-, i.e. 499DEM back end of last year) and it works as copier and fax (color too), I have a fat old SCSI scanner (Microtek X6) which works great with xsane, and I can't print in the moment since the OJ is not willing to work with Linux, at least not with a usb-ohci board. Might work better with usb-uhci, though. Just recently someone posted on this list that mf devices not even work well on Windoze ... (no idea about that) Cheers .... I just pulled in the HP-officeJet-0.8-23 package bundled with SuSE 7.3. Followed the description in the documentation and was up and scanning within a hour.
It really depends on what your need from your device. I can use my LaserJet 1100A for simple b/w or grayscale multipage scanning. I use a real scanner for other tasks. Regards Klaus

Hi Klaus, It's certainly different in your case. First and biggest issue, as I mentioned, is usb-ohci. This isn't working like it is with usb-uhci. Next, the LaserJet 1100A seems to be supported by SuSE out-of-the-box and you needn't get a driver from linuxprinting, which then requires compiling a new, tweaked ghostscript, and, some new foomatic script, and tweaking the ptal backend ... forgot the rest:-) What it's all about, you just can't generalize, it may work well with this device on that system, and it may be a total desaster if you are wolfi or some equally stoopid loser:-) Cheers none the less !! My LaserJet 1100 is connected to the parallel port.
Sorry if I mislead anyone.
Next, the LaserJet 1100A seems to be supported by SuSE out-of-the-box sure, it uses Ghostscript's HP LaserJet 4 (PCL 5) driver.
What it's all about, you just can't generalize, it may work well with this device on that system, and it may be a total disaster if you are wolfi or some equally stoopid loser:-) I guess not. I was the fool this time :-)
