WordPerfect8 install question
Following a recent discussion on this list I've tried to install WordPerfect8 from an old mandrake dist. After the install I tried to run it in a shell. The only output was xwp: can't load library 'libXpm.so.4' So I checked, I do indeed have this in /usr/X11R6/lib/. OK, check the SDB, It says install shlibs5.rpm from ftp://...updates/ 14 mb and one yast (thats right I'm still running 7.2) later, same response. I check my mail archives and see a note about installing xshared.rpm update from suse. Ok I do this, it kind of messes up my xfree4.2 install but what the heck, I try wordperfect in a shell again, same response xwp: can't load library 'libXpm.so.4'. Fix my xFree86 install, check rpmfind, all I find seems to be what I already have installed (except nothing claiming to be SuSE specific, just mandrake, etc. Curiously there is little in the way of SuSE software to be found on this site, what gives.) So thats my story, I'm actually fairly happy w/ OO641d but was interested to see if WP8 could work on SuSE, I guess it won't, at least under xFree86 v 4.2.0. As A side note I did install Applixware 4.3, it is quite fast but sort of ugly, It wouldnt import Office 2000 (excel/word) but I believe Office 2000 is newer than Applix 4.3 so m$ probably fixed any compatability problems it had before release ;-) -- dh I've been awake: 5 hours 15 minutes Suse Linux 7.2 professional kernel 2.4.17, xFree86 4.2.0, kde 2.2.2
Hi All & David, Corel were going in the right direction for a while, but have gone over to he dark side now. It is, of course, mere coincidence, that at the same time, Micro$oft pumped a few millions into Corel.... Follow this url http://linux.corel.com/support/online.htm & select "General", under this heading.... Corel® WordPerfect® 8 for Linux® I've found it a most useful list when WordPerfect 8 for Tux, would not fire up. Good luck. :-) Greek Geek :-) David Herman wrote:

Apparently the problem relates to WP8 being compiled w/ libc5 essentially they say that in order to get wp8 to work I would need to revert to an older version of xFree86 (and perhaps an older kernel as well) I guess I'll just get by w/ the other excellent solutions while I wait for Gobe Productive to be finished. I don't know if this has been mentioned in this thread, since I don't have all of it, but basically, all you have to do is install shlibs5. This was also necessary with 7.3. I have WP8 working just fine on this SuSE 8.0 empowered laptop. Don

I don't know if you have followed the previous suggestions posted on this thread. Here are again: Install the package shlibs5-2001.7.29-40 (suse 8.0). Install the package. Here review the posts regarding the problems the installation script has with the kernel version. I think the package xshared.rpm was not necessary, but be mindfull of the versions of packages you install. You are in good shape if you get this: $ ldd /opt/wp8/wpbin/xwp # adjust to the proper installation path libXt.so.6 => /usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib/libXt.so.6 (0x40027000) libX11.so.6 => /usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib/libX11.so.6 (0x40069000) libXpm.so.4 => /usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib/libXpm.so.4 (0x40109000) libm.so.5 => /usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib/libm.so.5 (0x40117000) libc.so.5 => /usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib/libc.so.5 (0x40120000) libSM.so.6 => /usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib/libSM.so.6 (0x401dc000) libICE.so.6 => /usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib/libICE.so.6 (0x401e5000) That means all your library dependencies are fine. I have had WP8 running in this box since suse 7.2 -- Rafael
