automount of floppy stopped working.
Hello, My floppy (/dev/fd0) no longer automounts. By automount I don't mean "mounts when media inserted", but "mounts when accessed via My Computer". I have other devices that automount OK, but not /dev/fd0. Here is a section of my fstab: (I hope line-wrap doesn't make it unreadable.) ============================================================================================== /dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder subfs fs=cdfss,ro,procuid,nosuid,nodev,exec,iocharset=utf8 0 /dev/fd0 /media/floppy subfs fs=floppyfss, procuid, nodev, nosuid, sync 0 /dev/sdb /media/floppy1 subfs fs=floppyfss, procuid, nodev, nosuid, sync 0 ============================================================================================== floppy1 is a usb floppy which automounts OK, as does my CD drive. How can I troubleshoot this? -- Robert C. Paulsen, Jr. robert@paulsenonline.net
Hello Robert: I don't know if this will help but there's a 'help sheet' for SuSE 9.1 called: 9.1: Conventional Mounting Instead of subfs that can be found at the SuSE Linux Portal site under keyword search mount it's item number 6 in the search results. As I said, not sure if this is what you want or need. Cheers, Mike On Sunday 27 June 2004 09:46, Robert Paulsen wrote:

Each of these lines is missing a field. There should be two numbers at the end of each, not just one. Is that a copy&paste error in this mail, or a genuine error in fstab?
How can I troubleshoot this?
First step would be to monitor /var/log/messages for any clues when you try to access it

That's just how it is in fstab. I added an extra "0" but it didn't help.

Should have mentioned I looked at this -- no entries at time of problem. -- Robert C. Paulsen, Jr. robert@paulsenonline.net

Well, I rebooted the system and things went back to normal (mostly). I can now access the contents of my floppy via "My Computer", but the "My Computer" folder now has several (4) extraneous "USB Hard Disc" icons. Attempts to open any of those icons results in an error pop-up: Could not enter folder /media/usb-storage-odd-YEDATA-USBFloppyDrive:0:0:0p1 Worse, sometimes four of those will pop-up even when I *don't* access the icons directly. Just opening the "My Computer" folder sometimes is enough to trigger the error. Even *worse*, sometimes those icons open to 4 empty folders whose window can't be closed (doesn't respond to clicking on the "x" in the upper right hand title bar). Again, this does not require a direct access to the icon. I see why many people want to disable this whole subfs thing! -- Robert C. Paulsen, Jr. robert@paulsenonline.net

I'm having the exact same problem trying to mount my firewire drive: Could not enter folder /media/ieee1394_sbp2-00d04b35e0022046-0-0p1 "My Computer" folder also has 4 extraneous "Firewire Hard Disc" icons. A quick check of 'properties' shows the drive is unmounted. How do we mount a drive manually in automount? Perhaps this will solve the problem.

This doesn't happen to me.

I can still manipulate the window normally. Jerome

Well, I added the extra "0" to the end of those lines in fstab, which didn't help, but I left fstab modified like this and rebooted. I suppose things are better since the floppy now gets mounted when I access it via "My Computer" but now I get several (4) extraneous "USB Hard Disk" icons in the "My Computer" folder. Attempts to access any of these results in an error like this: Could not enter folder /media/usb-storage-odd-YEDATA-USBFloppyDrive:0:0:0p1 Sometimes 4 of those will pop up even when I *don't* try do access them -- just by opening the "My Computer" folder. I don't think adding the extra "0" helped any since I was able to access the floppy vi "My Computer" several times over the last few weeks. I just noticed things went bad this morning. I think the reboot put things back to "normal". I now see why so many people want to disable this whole -- Robert C. Paulsen, Jr. robert@paulsenonline.net

Ok, then unmount it as root and I think you'll find that the user can access normally then. Open a shell, su to root, umount /dev/fd0 and off you go! I had this happen when I created an icon on the desktop and once unmounted as root, it behaved normally for the user.
