sorry, it's a so common question, but googling gave me several ideas and I am embarrassed: Could someone give a direct hint about the best way to restoring grub as my boot loader? It already has suse 9.3, slackware 9.3, slackware 10.1, windows 98 - and as we know windows xp (x64) overwrites the grub. I need to restore GRUB in order to boot SuSE 9.3 and add Windows XP in its menu thru YaST. Thaks for any help a.

can't you boot from CD #1 (SUSE) and do a repair? I think one of the repair options is to repair the MBR or bootloader. I know it happened to me before.. -- Paul Cartwright Registered Linux user # 367800

Additionally, booting from CD1 or DVD using the boot from harddisk option should be able to boot your system since the /boot/grub should still be in tact. You can then run YaST2/System/BootLoader to restore the MBR. -- Jerry Feldman

"Booting from harddisk" option will call Windows XP bootloader, where there are just two choices, win98 or winxp. Jerry Feldman escreveu:

Hello, Boot your computer with the SuSE 9.3 dvd, choose "Boot the installed system" (sorry it is certainly not the exact translation from French) then when SuSe 9.3 is running edit your menu.lst file and with YaST2 restore your boot loader, or run grub-install /dev/hdx or /dev/sdx according to your IDE or SATA/SCSI disk. Replace the "x" in order to get the exact device wanted. Michel.
My guess, is that booting with rescue disk and typing: $root $grub grub>root (hd0,5) grub>setup (hd0) grub>quit ...will solve the problem. Is this correct? a. Adagilson Batista Bispo da Silva escreveu:

You're right. It just did the job. Thanks a. Silviu Marin-Caea escreveu:

Now that grub was restored as boot loader I need to add Windows XP (in hda9) to Grub menu. I read some tutorial and articles and they make me understang that typing: title Windows XP hide (hd0,0) unhide (hd0,8) rootnoverify (hd0,8) chainloader +1 makeactive ...would make windows xp to boot, but the following error apears: "Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x7 chainloader +1" I can load windows 98 (in hda1) just with the lines -- I had already tried this for windows xp also: title Windows 98 root (hd0,0) chainloader +1 Any help? a.
