Forgive me if this is covered elsewhere- I could not find it in either Suse 7.2 manuals or on the web... but what is the preferred way to set up single interface multihoming on suse? ie do I need to execute ifconfig in a script somewhere or can I add the alias entry somewhere? -mab --

I always found that one disadvantage of SuSE is that slogan they carry: "Have a lot of fun". Having fun with the OS is not my primary goal. It causes some irritation. Am I the only one to see it this way? (I remember someone complaining: looks like linux is just a stupid game.) I removed the phrase from /etc/motd (message of the day), so it's gone. But, what's more, I always wondered how a company with this slogan could ever be taken serious in business life. So I am glad to see now that at least they don't proclaim it from the housetops. SH
I think it's meant to be sardonic.
Hi, thanks to all who gave their opinion. For me, 'having fun' always meant: 'playing a game'. But many of the things I do with my computer are bloody serious! <g> For Ken Hughes and Timothy Butler, 'having fun' is more like 'being satisfied', being happy with it. For gabriel it's a friendly little message, which should address your sense of humour. For Michael Carr it's even grim humour! :-D I agree very much with Patrick Nelson that it would be desirable not to make the professional version look as if it were aimed at children. Then there's Alex who finds this discussion rather unimportant. Well, wittingly or unwittingly, I think you're always looking for things you can identify with, so you can say: this is 'my' distro, this is 'my' style, this is what I want to present myself with. For some it's more important than for others, I believe that it gets more important when you grow older. I'm 51 now.... Then there's Kastus and Álvaro who pointed me to Linus's philosophy and his book, 'Just for fun'. I will read it, it seems interesting to find out what exactly is his conception of 'fun'. Though I don't believe that everything he says is sacred.... :-v Well, looks like I've got something to do. Thanks again, cheers, Sjoerd

I respect your opinion on this. I always liked it, especially coming from HP-UX where _nothing_ was fun. ;^) I wouldn't expect fun to be everyone's primary goal with Linux either, but shouldn't it be on the list? When was the last time you had "fun" with Windows? I have fun with Linux every day in that I learn something new or find out an easier way to do something. As for being taken seriously, if IBM backs you with a slogan like that then anyone should! ;^) I agree with changing the motd too....at least so it doesn't look like a stock install. :) Ken
personally, i've always liked it if you don't have a sense of humour about your work you can always remove it like you have but personally, i'm rather fond of the little message it's like fortune it's just neat

I don't have the original reference handy, but IIRC this "fun" thing originates from Linus himself. "Having fun" was the primary goal of creating Linux for him. SuSE just picked it up from Linus. You may like it not, but it is part of Linux. -Kastus

Look at the title of Linus's book: "Just for fun" (IIRC)... so, it's part of Linux; using it as a motto... Alvaro Novo SuSE 7.1 Pro -=- Kernel 2.4.7-4GB -=- KDE 2.2.1 1:48pm up 2 days, 12:54, 4 users, load average: 0.58, 0.53, 0.47
Well, look at it this way - if your computer works right you will most likely have a lot of fun, or at least more fun at your job than you did before, right? -Tim

And in what alternate universe will the Pointy Haired Bosses who might not take Linux seriously, ever even *see* the command login prompt?
