This happens either if you have turned apm=off as a kernel parameter or if you use SMP. In the second case add : apm=power-off as kernel parameter.

you have to edit the file : /boot/grub/menu.lst and on the first line beginning by "kernel" you have the available kernel parameters either get rid of apm=off or add apm=power-off catimimi

You certainly use Lilo and not Grub at boot. In the case of Lilo, you have to edit the file /etc/lilo.conf and either delete apm=off or add apm=power-off on the first line beginning by append. Catimimi.

First this line has unusefull duplicated entries. Second it looks like the entry for the Safe settings. Don't you have another "append" entry : the first one ? Do you use SMP ( two processors) ? If so your append line could be : append = " ide=nodma acpi=off apm=power-off" Please send me your file /etc/lilo.conf and tell be if your kernel is SMP and if your machine shutdown completely with Windows. I have Suse 8.1 pro with an abit kx7-333 motherboard. I have the same shutdown problem discussed in this thread. My append line looks like: "hdc=ide-scsi hdg=ide-scsi pci=acpi vga=788". I have also tried without the pci=acpi and it still won't shut down. It shuts down fine with win98 and I do not have smp.
Shawn, You must have APM compiled in your kernel to make this work. Do not have ACPI compiled with the APM as I do not believe you need ACPI unless you have a laptop. Abraham Shawn Tanner wrote:

Abraham
Shouldn't APM be compiled into the kernel by default? I haven't changed the kernel from the initially installed one.

Yes, the computer shuts down completely with Windows. My kernel is not SMP: orion@cosmos:~> rpm -qa | grep "^k_" k_athlon-2.4.19-66 Here is my /etc/lilo.conf file: # Modified by YaST2. <snip> Why is the option for acpi=off in your file twice? Some computers in order to shutdown need the acpi turned on. Mine does. Without it, I have to power down manually. Of course, you may have a reason to have it disabled. Just my thoughts. I've no more ideas, check that apm is compiled in your kernel and/or test the new 2.4.20 kernel from Mantel. The apm management was greatly improved. But if you follow this group I had problems with sound which were solved. Anyway delete the duplicated entries in lilo.conf. Catimimi.

I use suse 8.1 with kde 3.0 A few days ago I used Ximian's red carpet [trial] to download Evolution 1.2.2. To do so I had to agree to lose the installed version of gnucash. Does anybody know if there is a compatible [with evolution 1.2.2] version? Recently I noticed that my kde desktop [/home/scn/] has been mostly replaced by nautilus. I wonder if the d/l of evolution 1.2.2 has corrupted the kde? Does anybody know how to get the full kde destop back. I enter /home/scn with the kde desktop selected and it seems to stay kde until evolution opens. All ideas welcome. thanks serge

What's happened is that you're still running KDE, but nautilus is also running and is configured to manage your desktop. It is doing this because, at some point, when running Evolution, you chose the Help option or something similar, which launched Nautilus (in the same way that other apps will launch Konqueror under Gnome - both these are nasty and we users should really be able to control which file manager is launched!). The way to get out of this is to run nautilus from a terminal to bring up a nautilus window. Then, go to Edit->Preferences, choose the Desktop & Trash panel and deselect "Use nautilus to draw the desktop". Et voila! HTH John (Should this perhaps go into the FAQ?
