Hardware shopping, How about AMD if make it as a small server?
Hi list:
The next month, i will setup a small server as maillist/web. But i could
only afford a little money. Then i think of AMD. But i never used it to be
server even in a very small envirement before.
Aybody has experience with amd cpu ? Is it stable and powerful ?? BTW:
which brand of motherboard you are using ? This small server will run email
relate service, and for about 10 virtual Host customers, perhaps mysql
would run on it.. ftp and rsync are must.
Any suggestion is welcome ,and thanks a lot :))

Hello, The amd processor will do fine for you. I am running an amd athlon 1.4 on my main server here at work an am using it as a file/printer server with samba. have never had one problem with it the machine, it just sits there chugging along with no problems, I do not see an problem for you with running mail server on it an also mysql also. jack malone Network Administrator EAST TEXAS LIGHTHOUSE FOR THE BLIND dba HORIZON INDUSTRIES 903-595-3444 http://www.horizonind.com At 11:44 PM 2/7/2003 +0000, hzqbbc wrote:

I'll throw my 2 cents on motherboards in here. In the past I've had good luck with any of these: Asus Tyan SuperMicro MSI Intel However, that being said these are likely to be some of the most expensive boards (except maybe the MSI and possibly the SuperMicro) you can find. I also typically use Intel processors. I would avoid Abit boards due to their bad capacitor issue (which has bit me twice so far on the old SA-6R boards). If you are in the US contact me off list. I may be able to help you out. -- John LeMay KC2KTH Senior Enterprise Consultant NJMC | http://www.njmc.com | Phone 732-557-4848 Specializing in Microsoft and Unix based solutions

The wonderful thing about Linux is that you could probably do this on a PII 233 and it'd still be solid. I think for a small web/mail/db/ftp server and 10 hosts anything equivalent to a PIII is fine, your CPU certainly shouldn't be your bottleneck. I run qmail / courier imap-pop3 / spamd / apache2+php / mysql / postgres / ftp / tomcat / samba / cups on a PIII 450 and I can still watch a DVD (though if a lot of e-mail comes in at once, it'll bog a bit) No idea on board brands, I'm thinking of getting a new board myself, also an Athlon... Athlon has been around long enough to be considered "stable" IMO. Have fun! Josh
Right, but some of my customer 's website will cause a lot of load, one of my current running server, a PII 350/384RAM/20G IDE. His website is running a cgi forum (written in perl). there are about 100- 130 people online, at the same time, other two customers's website are us- ing mysql. btw: and there are 3-5 ftp connection and email inbond.. system uptime show "13.02, 10.18, 11.72".. a bit high load...and i fell slow when i login that server using ssh. So hardware upgrade is a must. Josh Trutwin writes:

I agree that an AMD would likely be a fine choice for a small server. I'll also point out that for around $35 US you can install an ATA100 RAID controller to provide some redundancy. From what I've seen this controller can be installed later and the drive moved. Don't try that with Windows! ;) -- John LeMay KC2KTH Senior Enterprise Consultant NJMC | http://www.njmc.com | Phone 732-557-4848 Specializing in Microsoft and Unix based solutions
Hamm...yes~~ , i have seen certain kind of IDE raid card only about 34 US and provide 2 channel ATA 100. But does AMD athlon + PC motherboard = stable ??? I never test this and have some doubt about it. John LeMay writes:

Hi, You can buy AMD, but try to avoid VIA KT chipsets (not sure about SiS, but I think they also should be avoided). The best cheap chipset for Athlon XP is AMD761. I had really bad experience with VIA KT in the past (and other people on the mailing list, too). On Saturday, Feb 8, 2003, at 01:44 Europe/Helsinki, hzqbbc wrote:

I love AMD processors and have built many servers, using only AMD processors. I have tried ASUS mother boards and TYAN and have been very pleased with them. Stay away from SiS and SOYO
