[SLE] 3com 3c509 and Suse 6.1
Hello, I am trying to set up a suse 6.1 machine to just use as a telnet gateway to our private network. I'm using an old 486 compaq presario cds 920 system. I have a 3com 3c509 ISA NIC, the card is detected and eth0 comes up fine. The problem is that when I try to ping any machine on our local network, there is 100% packet loss. In short, even though the network card is detected I still do not get a connection. Are there any possible causes for this? I tried changing the slots the card was in. I was going to attempt to change the card, but the only spare card I have around is a netgear EA201 card. The netgear card is not listed in the network configuration under YaST. Is there a way I can configure the netgear card to be used -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
I'm not too sure why the 3c509 is failing - it would suggest a network issue rather than a card I would have thought - however.... I also have an ea201 (and a 3c509) and the ea201 is an NE2000 compatible - select this and see how you get on Pete On Fri, 07 Jul 2000, you wrote:

There's an obvious solution with the 3c509s. They're known to have PNP turned on and they do not function under Linux with PNP turned on. You need to go to DOS (either installed or boot disked) then use the second disk for the NIC (you can download from 3com), and run the pnpdsabl.bat. Then reboot back to linux and the NIC should work fine. Keep that in mind whenever you add 3c509s or any other NICs for that matter. Hi, You know the solution worked, however I'm getting ping times that are insane. Pinging machines on my local network I get ping times returned averaging about 1200ms. Why is this so slow? Is there some configuration change I need to make? Any help would be greatly appreciated. ---Andy Calyth wrote:

Hi Andy, I had a similar problem with this card when using more than three network cards in the same box. It was solved adding the following lines to /etc/conf.modules: alias eth0 3c59x options 3c59x options=20 Take a look at http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/lr_3com90x.html as there are some other options that may suit your case better. Hope it works for you to. []s, Bráulio Weimann Gergull Andy Malato wrote:
