Hi Does anyone know how to add console as an option in the KDM login window? I got KDE2 running on SuSE 6.4 (Kernel 2.2.14) but now I find that it would be nice to be able to select "console" when I login to my system. I suspect it should be pretty simple, but I'm afraid to screw up my X configuration... I know that I can get a virtual console (ALT+CRTL+F*) but what I want is to login to the system without X running in the background. And I find it too cumbersome to first login to KDE, then open a terminal, then SU to root, to issue init 2, to have KDE and X shutdown, leaving me in a *real* console... Couldn't seem to find any documentation that covers this... And yes, I am relatively new to Linux, so please bear with me... Jon

You can su, then edit /etc/inittab in the line that is currently set to
# default runlevel id:3:initdefault:
Change the "3" to "2", and the next boot will be to the console mode. This true of 6.4, but I have read somewhere that in 7.1 a lot of stuff moved close to the standard and the runlevels have changed. I don't know how this will effect /etc/inittab. Jon, If you want to get rid of the GUI login all together and just type startx or not type startx to use a console only..then you can change this in the /etc/rc.config # Here you can set the default Display manager (kdm/xdm/gdm/wdm/console). # Attention: CHECK_INITTAB has to be set to yes, to activate this feature. # If DISPLAYMANAGER is set to console, SuSEconfig will not bother you # with a missing XF86Config. # DISPLAYMANAGER="" Just make sure that it has nothing set..and you won't have to deal with that GUI login screen. * Jon Clausen (jonclausen@get2net.dk) [010225 05:07]: =>Hi => =>Does anyone know how to add console as an option in the KDM login window? => =>I got KDE2 running on SuSE 6.4 (Kernel 2.2.14) but now I find that it would =>be nice to be able to select "console" when I login to my system. Yes Ben. Anybody can do that. ;-) I think he is aware of that too. I further think the question indeed aims much deeper: Have the graphical login and select "console" instead of "KDE" as "windowmanager" (This obviously makes sense with KDM only) After login, X shuts down and after logout X and KDM gets restarted. I know this behaviour from HP-UX 10.20 that offers a "console mode" from the graphical login. So, this looks more like a sensible request for feedback@suse.com Juergen -- =========================================== __ _ Juergen Braukmann juergen.braukmann@gmx.de| -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Tel: 0201-743648 dk4jb@db0qs.#nrw.deu.eu | /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ===========================================_\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\

What threw me off in his original question was this: "I know that I can get a virtual console (ALT+CRTL+F*) but what I want is to login to the system without X running in the background". That tells me someone wants a non-X init level. The above scenario from Juergen is pretty cool if that's what one is looking for. Greg
