Why not go for a dual Opteron box (if you have the money)? SuSE Linux 9.0 will also be available for the AMD64 platform.
Hi guys,
Since we're on the dual xeons/dual opterons subject, here it goes:
I'm going to buy a new set of servers to have at home.
Objective: - 1 Mail server - 1 Storage/ftp server - 1 Backup server (I'll need to sychroize some DFS with client lans through VPN, so this one will have to be windows, or I'll get VMWare to emulate some Windows servers)
I was thinking about waiting for athlon-64, but I'm really getting undecided, and a dual processor system is getting more and more attractive. Could any of you guys shed some opinion/light about the diferences between Xeon/Opteron/Athlon64 and whats the best?
Thanks in advance,
FJMA

I work at home, so that's my office, and that is why I said I wanted to buy the new set of servers to had at home. I usued to have a couple of Dual Athlon MP 1800+ with Asus boards, but I sold them, and now I'm trying to figure out what to buy. Any suggestion will be greatly apretiated.

You might want to check out www.ironsystems.com. I bought for 1U rack systems from them with SuSE 8.2 pre-installed for under US $700 ea. These were low end models but they do have a wide range to choose from. -- Ken Schneider unix user since 1989 linux user since 1994 SuSE user since 1998

I would say, that if you're aiming for top performance with SuSE Linux, go for AMD Opteron. SuSE has x86-64 versions available. And upcoming "standard" releases are rumoured to also include full Opteron support. Anders Norrbring Norrbring Consulting

Yes, there will be a professional edition for AMD64. Philipp -- Philipp Thomas work: pthomas@suse.de private: philipp.thomas@t-link.de

Philipp, Does that mean that there will be a "standard" version for 32 bit, and a "special" one for AMD64? If so, as I have systems running on both architectures, I'll have to buy both of them. Not much of a problem for me, but just wanted to be sure...
