anyone have a solution to this mystery?
Okay , got a nice shiny new 8.1 install .. nearlly have all my own filse restored... BUT, I can not connect to either SuSE.de or Suse.com to do updates ( for the video card at least ..) I think, tho I am not certain as I'I've always been able to update as soon as I get my desktop back from all ththe fiddley stuff it takes to make one happy looking at a screen for hours.. When I attempt to use Yast2 it shows the address for Suse.de, for instance as *ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/ suse/ftp.suse.com/suse* Nothing happens when you select that , btw, it appaers as if it wants to connect to something but it majorly confused. The one for Suse.com is simularly screwed up ... It appears as if two itmes have run together in a file somewhere ..but I've not idea where the files might be ? Suggestions ? in fact no mater what server I pick all I get it the items which says "Initialising for FTP/HTTP update. One momnet please , tho it never seems able to get initialised I have the same problem if I attempt to update from root... so I'm stumped any help or guidance will be appreciated j

Are you behind a firewall? Philipp Thomas posted one possible solution the other day. Edit /etc/wgetrc and change #passive_ftp = off to passive_ftp = on and try online update again Anders

One thing that's probably worth trying is ngrep. It's grep for your network interface .. basically ngrep -d eth0 will show you everything going through your NIC. It's a great diagnostic tool, especially when you have a GUI hiding the actual workings of a particular program. If you run ngrep in a terminal you should be able to see the FTP transaction, or lack of, that YaST is attempting. The URL you mention is, presumably, a mirror of suse.com, so the ftp.suse.com in the middle of it probably isn't a problem. sjb

I have the same problem. Mine hangs on "Intialising for FTP/HTTP update" for about four minutes, then it is OK. Have to be patient with 8.1! At the moment, I only have 8.1 on my "experimenting" drive, so am not running a firewall. I only have a dial-up connection. The /etc/wgetrc edit mentioned by Phillipp and Anders hasn't made any difference. Incidentally, you have shown a space between /linux/ and suse/. There shouldn't be one. If it's not a typo, check /etc/suseserver. Sorry I can't be of any help, but I hope someone can solve the hang-up problem. Keith
