Today ... I went for a walk into town with my daughter, and ... Finally purchased the 8.1 professional update ... Well, in short: installation goes as easy as nothing else, but still .. do not try to update an existing installation! It stalled twenty times before I finally decided to do a clean install. I wonder if I will live to see this getting better. That's it so far, enjoy yourself ... I'll start burning copies the other minute! Cheers ... I did an upgrade from 8.0, and it was the first SuSE upgrade I've ever done. I figured it was worth a try. I got about 15 emails pointing to config files which needed attention (or at least a decision on my part), but other than that it went completely smoothly. I was seriously impressed. -- 3:40pm up 8:17, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.02, 0.03

I haven't read anything - I just got on with it! :o) I wouldn't try an upgrade across major releases. There's an awful lot of differences between 7.x and 8.1 and I wouldn't trust it to give me an error free installation. No harm in trying I suppose, as long as you accept you'll probably want to wipe the disk and start again afterwards. -- 4:59pm up 9:35, 1 user, load average: 0.04, 0.02, 0.00

I'm about to do my first upgrade too. Any chance you could post the config info you got, to help us other newbies? Cheers, TonyB
Ok, so you've got it up and running. Give us the poop. What do you notice that's new and improved? Any new toys or eye-candy? Any long-awaited fixes? Any support for hardware that was previously not well supported? If we've got 8.0 and have been getting regular YOU updates, what's the delta when moving to 8.1? Has anybody installed it from a Pioneer DVD? Did it work, this time? Inquiring minds want to know. :-) /kevin

8.0 worked very nicely on my box, so 8.1 didn't have many issues to fix for me. The thing that really stands out is the improvement to the Yast text mode interface. It's still not perfect, but it's a massive improvement on the Yast of 8.0, IMHO. I never use the GUI version now... :o) -- 8:11am up 1 day, 47 min, 1 user, load average: 0.01, 0.08, 0.08

Er, not sure what you mean by "config info". I ran the upgrade from the CD by following my nose sort of thing, and when it had finished I switched to root and was told I had about 20 emails. I read them all, and each described a configuration file change which Yast couldn't handle unaided. Something along the lines of "you've changed file xxx, my version is in xxx.suse". I spent half an hour checking each one by hand, making decisions about what changes were required. Since then it's worked flawlessly. So I suppose those emails would be the closest I got to "config info", but obviously they'll be useless on any other system. -- 8:06am up 1 day, 42 min, 1 user, load average: 0.13, 0.11, 0.09

My mistake, Derek, I assumed you meant that you'd had email advice from other users. 1. On a related topic, what advice would you all give a newbie about which files to backup before doing an update? I guess on my simple (single-user desktop) system, just going from 8.0 to 8.1 is not going to be a major problem. But in general, what should I back up? My /home directory obviously. The 8.1 Admin Guide (page 30) also suggest /etc (all of it?), and that I should 'review' files in /var/lib. Review how? 2. I want to backup to CD, not just before upgrading, but on a regular basis. Any ideas on good programs for doing 'since saves' (i.e. save selected files which have changed since the last save)? All help gratefully received, Cheers, TonyB

If you can't take a tape backup of the whole lot, the key would be avoiding loosing anything which might not be recreated properly in the event of a disasterous experience which results in needing a complete reinstall from scratch. Copy /home, plus all of /etc, plus anything you might have changed since 8.0 installed its defaults. (/etc/hosts files, security .allow files, etc.). If you've got the capacity somewhere, copy all of /var. Basically, if you youself, SuSE and Yast from 8.0 created or configured something for your system, you should be able to install, create or configure it again. Anything you might have trouble with or forget (ISP phone numbers and passwords, or your exact Samba shares for example), you should at least write down, if not take a copy of. Disclaimers apply. I can't tell you what's important on your box. I did the above for mine, and never had to test my backup plan.

A great article on that sort of thing is here: http://www.mikerubel.org/computers/rsync_snapshots/ -- 12:37pm up 1 day, 5:13, 1 user, load average: 0.03, 0.01, 0.00
