[opensuse] ATI Driver Surprise
Hi, When I completed my initial openSUSE 11.1 installation I was surprised to see that I had an ATI driver installed. According to the Konqueror sysinfo:/ display, it is: Display Info Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc Model: RV350 AR Driver: radeon (3D Support) (Not a high-end card by today's standards, but glxgears indicates about 2500 FPS.) Where did this driver come from? I have a friend who did an openSUSE 11.1 install on a Dell Optiplex 755 with an ATI Radeon (specific model unknown to me at the moment, but it's one of these: ATI Radeon X1300, ATI Radeon™ HD 2400 PRO or ATI Radeon™ HD 2400 XT) and he didn't get a 3D driver. So the questions I have are: 1) Where did my driver come from? 2) Why didn't my friend's installation yield an ATI driver? I ran "aticonfig", after which things work. Sadly, the FPS for glxgears is significantly worse than it was with the driver that comes bundled with openSUSE 11.1. Oddly enough, though, Stellarium reports a much higher FPS than it did under the previous driver. Celestia seems faster, too, but I don't see an option to enable an FPS display in that app, so I have only a subjective sense based on just a little prior use. I guess I'll install Google Earth and see how that behaves. It's the thing (besides Second Life) for which I have the best feel for 3D performance.

Yes i noticed the the frame rate was poor too saay the least dont think it toped 200 FPS using fgl_glxgears standard glxgears wound not run moanig about the libs again but wanting them back the other way Ho Humm Spose I'll get to looking at it one time althou i did choose to build a distro specific package but it still got it wrong . In the 64 bit install, there is a problem with the 32 bit fglrx_dri.so. You can go to /usr/lib/dri and rename the current fglrx_dri.so and then ln -s /usr/lib64/dri/fglrx_dri.so /usr/lib/dri/fglrx_dri.so

I did it and still no change in behavior. I'll try that again when I wind out why ati installer breaks in the middle of compilation. It stops when it can't copy file to directory. After removing files it bombs out on the same place and files are again there, so it seems like it is trying copy twice and in second attempt runs in its own file, and stops. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Have you tried using the option to build for the distro i usee it native first time and had it fail part way thru then used the specific distro option to pick suse 11.1 and it went thru just need the symlinks as above to work fully although frame rates are a bit poor For some reason there seems to be a lot of variation in the way a lot of software behaves both on install and once running between different installs of the same version on similar hardware this is something that needs nailing down it has been prevelent for too long now Cheers Pete . -- SuSE Linux 10.3-Alpha3. Doesn't work for me either, but I'm on SUSE 10.3 rather than 11 and using the build from the ati repo for 10.3, so maybe it's not relevant. Still annoying that I only get frame speeds around 250, though. Cheers Peter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I had posted this a few weeks back on my issue with the ATI driver. I built and installed mine as a distro specific per the ATI instructions. My DRI didn't work either which kept the 3D from working. In fact, the xgl stuff over all seemed pretty messed up. I'm running a X64 installation using 11.1. I found that it was referencing the 32 bit location instead of the 64 bit. This is an ATI issue not a SuSE. I understand. Unfortunately, sometimes we are stuck with what comes in a system. My FPS using glxgears is around 2650-2700. I have 3d enabled with the work around previously described. Now with that said, I should be in the 4-6K range so there is something within the last few released drivers that doesn't render well. On a positive note, ATI is now at least releasing updates monthly so with a little bit of luck and having our fingers crossed, it will be addressed very soon. -- Thank you, Michael.A.Sterba ARS - KG7HQ Assistant Director/Technical Specialist Northwest Division, ARRL kg7hq@arrl.net http://www.kg7hq.wetnet.net APRS: kg7hq, kg7hq-9, Sedro Digi Echolink node:158264 Jabber: kg7hq@jabber.wetnet.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Have you tried turning off 'wait for vertical refresh' in the ATI control panel? Glxgears went from 60(!) to 5000 fps when I did. Hi,

Where did this driver come from? I have a friend who did an openSUSE 11.1 install on a Dell Optiplex 755 with an ATI Radeon (specific model unknown to me at the moment, but it's one of these: ATI Radeon X1300, ATI Radeon™ HD 2400 PRO or ATI Radeon™ HD 2400 XT) and he didn't get a 3D driver.
So the questions I have are:
1) Where did my driver come from? 2) Why didn't my friend's installation yield an ATI driver?

Hi, What I think is that the new open source radeon driver (radeon) -included in the kernel (?)- is now able to provide hardware 3D acceleration for this kind of "old" cards. Thus you might not need the proprietary driver from ATI (fglrx). However the ATI driver may perform better (or may not ;-)) and surely provides much more capabilities. In your case, it seems that the fglrx driver outperforms the opensource one. And yes glxgears (and fgl_glxgears) are not true benchmarking tools. They are only useful to test wether the hardware acceleration is used or not. Matthias -- / \ /_!_\ My e-mail address has just changed.
