[opensuse] Opera: segmentation fault - how to find what is broken?
Hi! Suddenly (probably after some update), my Opera (latest available 9.10-3.1) got broken. When I try to start it, I get "Segmentation fault". I'm still running openSUSE 10.0 ('cause I don't think I can upgrade from 10.0 -> 10.2). I downgraded the Opera to 9.02 and I'm still just getting the segfault. So it's not Opera itself, but something else. How can I find where the problem is? Opera has quite a lot of dependencies - should I down grade them all? That would contain major things also, which would mean quite a job as that would lead to other downgrades too. What should I do? -- H -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Um, well I actually tried it quickly with my old laptop. It also had 10.0. During the installation YaST did not find any partition it could upgrade. Only option was installation from scratch. But do you have anything for me about what causes Opera to crash. Now also Kaffein crashes all the time. Something is definitely wrong, but what? Where? I do not know where to look? -- H -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
I just had the same problem on 10.2, after running the latest update (probably the Xorg update did Opera in). I started opera with 'strace' and wasn't able to figure out the problem. I also removed "~/.opera/" in case some of the settings were messed up, and that didn't help either. I ended up going to www.opera.com (with Firefox :) and downloaded+installed the very latest Opera RPM for SuSE 10.2, and that solved the problem. Opera is now back up and running on my SuSE 10.2. - BS -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes, it could be X.org as I also had Kaffeine crash all the time. Although, that went away as I changed back to one step older kernel. Opera still crashes.

I also removed the settings. I do not know how to start opera with 'strace' (at least the command line options that I tried either were wrong or didn't give anything.) I'll Google for that...

Yes, I thought about that. But we all have our own users so installing Opera from SUSE sources (YaST or smart) works for everybody where as doing it manually works only for me I guess. Or course, the latest version is not yet available for SUSE from the YaST sources, so maybe I'll stop by there. :-) It's just that I do not think it's Operas fault as couple of the latest versions that I tried all crash... and some of them did work. So the problem is somewhere else, I'm sure. -- HG. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

strace -o somefile opera If the program produces childs: strace -ff -o somefile opera the trace is dumped to file "somefile" (or files).

If you install as root in a standard place it should work for everybody. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Yes, it seemed to be the X.org update. Thanks to everybody who helped. It was finally now fixed, but I'm not sure how as the last update I had I updated at least kernel and Opera to the new 9.2 version (I do not think there was a new update for X.org though...). Thanks again for your help! -- HG. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

There was an Xorg update Friday last week, and another for Opera last Tuesday. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I don't know. I always have been able to upgrade. It's difficult to guess what your problem could have been. Perhaps some files were deleted and the OS wasn't recognized as "suse".

No, I'm sorry. I don't use Opera myself, just a few times. Ideas...? You don't see anything in any log? There could be a ~/.X.err. Try starting opera from an xterm, some programs output error messages there. Find out if it has command line options like "--verbose". Google it: you might not be alone. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I don't think so. That was my ... err "not that much on the edge" -laptop :-) Very basic SUSE installation. Only Guru and Packman in addition to SUSE sources. Everything was there and fine. (BTW, after the new installation of 10.2, my 3COM WLAN card didn't work anymore... it did in 10.0. Sigh.)

Nothing like that there.

I did run it from the command line as if I start it from the menu, nothing happens. From command line, I get segmentation fault. Google didn't know anything. All segfaults there were from way back. -- H -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You could try downloading Opera 9.2 (the very latest). I usually download from Opera.com and not from suse and I have no problems on openSuse 10.1 with KDE3.5.6. But i do have the occasional crash on openSuse 10.2 especially on Slashdot even with the latest from Opera.
