Nvidia woes after upgrading to kernel 2.6.8-24.5
_________Has anyone else had trouble after upgrading to the latest kernel update from Suse? After a reboot X didn't come up. I'm getting a message saying 'failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel driver'. I can insmod it, but the message is still there. I did use YOU to reinstall the driver. Any help *much* appreciated. I've had some problems on each kernel, including the original off the dvd. I didn't use YOU tonight, I used the nvidia installer after booting to init 3. After rebuilding the modules, I logged in as a regualr user and tried to startx. It failed. As root I tried sax2 -m 0=nvidia That failed. I had backed up a working XF86Config. I restored it. X failed. Since my backed up XF86Config was setup for nvidia I tried as root sax2 with no options/switches and that worked. nvidia module is loaded and working now. Good luck Doug

Check that /lib/modules/2.6.8-24.5/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko exists, I suspect it doesn't, so you need to do "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6629-pkg1.run". I'm not familiar with what YaST does as the only time I tried it, it didn't work. init 3 sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6629-pkg1.run init 5 Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Wasn't there an email on this same problem here yesterday? I believe Anders explained to someone else this same thing and how to fix it. Turns out the thread was more about 3D, but I still think it might be helpful for your problem as well. Here is the initial mail: http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=suse-linux-e&m=110185347608267&w=2 The whole thread can be found here in the searchable mail archives: http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=suse-linux-e&w=2&r=1&s=nvidia&q=b Hope that helps to fix your problem. Install kernel-source and gcc, then do it again.
