Hello, when starting eclipse on a 64 bit machine we get messages about memory: eclipse GC Warning: Repeated allocation of very large block (appr. size 262144000): May lead to memory leak and poor performance. GC Warning: Out of Memory! Returning NIL! Exception in thread "Refresh Packages" java.lang.OutOfMemoryError <<No stacktrace available>> GC Warning: Repeated allocation of very large block (appr. size 65536000): May lead to memory leak and poor performance. We don't get those messages on a 32 bit machine with half the memory. When i check the running process on 32 bit, it takes a little over 400MB but on a 64 bit machine it goes over 3GB before i kill it. on 32 bits i have: which eclipse /usr/bin/eclipse which java /usr/bin/java java -version java version "1.6.0_07" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_07-b06) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 10.0-b23, mixed mode) zypper search eclipse Reading installed packages... Which version of Eclipse? i.e Callisto (3.3), Ganymede (3.4) - From SuSE or eclipse.org or elsewhere?
3.3 from suse repositories.

I tried something like this on the command line but same result: eclipse -Xmx512M Some people mentioned eclipse.ini but i can't find that file. I started the 32 bit version so it would create some configuration first but i still don't see it. So i removed the .eclipse directory to be sure it didn't have incorrect settings. Some people mentioned something about a validator but i didn't see the option in the menu they mentioned either.

I only selected eclipse and cdt from the yast software manager. It got this installed: rpm -qav | grep eclipse | sort
eclipse-3.3-150.1 eclipse-archdep-gtk2-3.3-144.1 eclipse-archdep-platform-3.3-144.1 eclipse-archdep-platform-commons-3.3-144.1 eclipse-archdep-scripts-3.3-144.1 eclipse-cdt-4.0-150.1 eclipse-cdt-archdep-4.0-143.1

I see that the problem has been solved... FYI Suse supply a script /usr/bin/eclipse that use a file /etc/eclipse.conf to load settings. If you need to make changes to eclipse loads (apart from using different workspaces I would suggest making the changes there). These are quite handy and I use them with my (non-SuSE) based installation (unfortunately the SuSE version is usually a little out of date but is a useful stable basic config, I am using a couple of things which are not available via SuSE so I do not usually use the SuSE build). - -- ============================================================================== I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone. Pierre I just opened eclipse on 11.0 on x86_64 without problems. My environment looks the same as well: rpm -q eclipse eclipse-3.3-150.1 which java /usr/bin/java java -version java version "1.6.0_07" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_07-b06) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 10.0-b23, mixed mode) which eclipse /usr/bin/eclipse No errors here... and a very shallow pool of eclipse knowledge to help troubleshoot with. Hopefully others will chime in. Good Luck -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E.
