It seems to scan the monitor (or detect the monitor's frequency ranges) when it restarts. The Nvidia drivers are the only ones I remember doing something this extensive. I remember the old Xservers would just do whatever you told it, regardless of what was in the XF86Config file. My only suggestion is to check the log files (X.err or something like that) to see what it attempts to do and if anything fails. I wish I was getting around 2500fps with my Geforce2 MX 400. I tried the latest nvidia drivers, but kept getting a crash with 3D games every five minutes or so. So I rolled back to 3123 on SuSE8.1 and things take a least an hour to crash now. I'm thinking about upgrading my card to something better. I'm thinking of a GeForce4 Ti, but I don't know what the best choice is now. Anyone know what is the best performance/price on cards now? Maybe fps/$ or poly/$ ? Jonathan Paul Cowherd Linux and Java Administrator Genscape, Inc. I'm getting about 2500 fps in gears, so no complaints there. But whenever I "startx" from the console, it take 30 - 35 seconds before the nvidia splash screen appears. I know this issue has appeared before on this list, but I haven't been able to find any real answers. The last time this happened to me (SuSE 8.0) I was experiencing a 15 - 20 second delay (same hardware). It seems to be getting worse! Does anyone have any clues at all about this? I've searched the nvidia and suse knowledge bases w/ no success. Any ideas would be appreciated.
