IDE CD-RW drive and k3b
Hi, I've recently replaced SCSI CD-ROM/CD-RW drives with IDE ones, and so far everything has been fine. SUSE 8.1 on booting offered me to configure the new drives, and I do have read access to both the CD-ROM and the CD-RW drive. Problem is, when running k3b setup, it seems like the CD-RW drive is not recognised as such. I've been told that I'd need to enable scsi emulation, and after looking at some entries in SUSE support database, here's what I've done: a) Added /sbin/modprobe ide-scsi to /etc/init.d/boot.local (as advised by a support entry) b) Added hda=ide-scsi and hdb=ide-scsi to grub.conf via YAST2. Rebooted, and still no progress. In k3b-setup, I am being presented with the CD-ROM and the CD-RW as Readers only.? Any idea what I migth be doing wrong ? Thanks Werner PS I've upgraded to KDE 3.1.3 and k3b 0.8.1 as well, and everything is running on SUSE 8.1

You're sure you meant hda and hdb? These two are on the first ide controller? No other IDE hard drives in that machine? -- _____________________________________ John Andersen
Correct, no IDE harddrives, SCSI only (sda and sdb). Werner On Wednesday 03 September 2003 11:25, John Andersen wrote:

Do you have the necessary symlinks in /dev setup? The easiest way is to use "Add Hardware" YaST2. It will set them up for you. Also, did you forget to reboot so that ide-scsii can take effect? Charles -- "Whip me. Beat me. Make me maintain AIX." (By Stephan Zielinski)

I'm running 8.2, so I'm not sure if it's the same for 8.1. But let me give it a try.

a) Added /sbin/modprobe ide-scsi to /etc/init.d/boot.local (as advised by a support entry)
It used to be /etc/init.d/boot.local back in 7.x. But have a look at /etc/sysconfig/kernel to see if ide-scsi has not already been configured on install. I have this line in /etc/sysconfig/kernel: MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT=" cdrom ide-cd ide-scsi" (Can also be controlled with Yast2's sysconfig editor.) Also check that /dev/cdrom is a link to /dev/sr0, and /dev/cdrecorder is a link to /dev/sr1.
In k3b-setup, I am being presented with the CD-ROM and the CD-RW as Readers only.?
If you execute k3b-setup from the KDE menu or from within k3b, you are not presented with a dialog to become root. Yes I find this rather strange, but instead you should 'su' to root and then execute: /opt/kde3/bin/k3bsetup SH

Which I don't have. Googling around, I ma getting the impression that this might be 8.2 specific. Can anybody point me to some documentation on this subject, i.e. which parameters are possible, etc.
(Can also be controlled with Yast2's sysconfig editor.)
Also check that /dev/cdrom is a link to /dev/sr0, and /dev/cdrecorder is a link to /dev/sr1.
Well, as of now, I've got most of the things working, incl. k3b. As advised, I added the relevant entries to /etc/fstab so that /dev/cdrom and /dev/dvd are linked to /dev/hda (which I excluded from ide-scsi) and /dev/cdrecorder is linked to /dev/sr0.

Once I've managed to get the scsi emulation right (incl. grub configuration), everything worked out of the box, iow k3b acknowledged that there is a CDROM and a CDRW drive and configured things accordingly. Right now, I am facing one problem only: I cannot use mplayer anymore to play DVDs. Somehow I am getting the feeling that this migth be ralted to all this. When instructing mplayer to play a dvd, I am getting an error message similar to: 'Cannot read VGM info.' Anybody ?
