Just wondering if anyone has run into this problem trying to install OpenOffice 1.1 Seem to have some kind of permissions trbl when running the install script. Kirby, That's what I got as well when trying to install as root using "su" only. Exited out of that, logged in with "sux" and all went well. Don't know if you want to bother though, finding bugs that prevent you from using it fully. I am seeing problems with spreadsheets I created with SO6 or OO1.0.3 earlier. Page Preview crashes, printing crashes. Printing worked ok on standard portrait output in Writer though. I think Anders had trouble with SWF output crashing from Impress, so it looks like the developers have a few things to work out. Those were our peliminary findings, so there may be many more. Don't be quick to get rid of your older versions just yet! ;o) Pat -- --- KMail v1.5.2 --- SuSE Linux Pro v8.2 --- Registered Linux User #225206 On any other day, that might seem strange...

No, just running RFS on local machine. Run as root. Kirb

If you are running KDE, have you tried running it using "kdesu ./setup"? A while ago on my 8.1 system sux stopped working for some reason, and a workaround was to use kdesu, or even "ssh -X localhost" ;-) Are you able to run other X apps as root? HTH, Jason

-- Hi Jason, hey, I'm back with my same old trouble... Ok, I tried as suggested using "kdesu ./setup" get following: knesbitt@NIS-951765887A:/tmp/OOo_1.1rc2_LinuxIntel_install> kdesu ./setup bash: kdesu: command not found In terms of running other X apps as root, you may have hit on the trbl. When attempting to run "gears" as su root, get this: NIS-951765887A:/tmp/OOo_1.1rc2_LinuxIntel_install # gears Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: Protocol not supported by server Basically the same type of error as the OO install. If I su back to my standard user account, no trouble running gears. Some kind of permissions trouble? Kirb

Do you have KDE installed? You need to start KDE as your normal user, or kdesu is in the rpm kdelibs3
In terms of running other X apps as root, you may have hit on the trbl. When attempting to run "gears" as su root, get this:
NIS-951765887A:/tmp/OOo_1.1rc2_LinuxIntel_install # gears Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: Protocol not supported by server
This is because normal su doesn't set up the permissions for root to use the normal user's X display. That's why you get the connection refused.

Looks like the root (ahem :) of the cause. Anther way is to manually set the X permissions for root, which I don't think is very secure, so don't run it if you're connected to the net while not running a firewall.... As user, type :
xhost + su #root password# # gears
What happens then? Remove the xhost access control with xhost - I've also used ssh in the past:
ssh -X root@localhost
Which also sets up the X forwarding, in this case locally encrypted. Hope these suggestions help. Jason

And that command would be??? How about "sux" = super user with X permissions! Open the console and type sux, the psswrd. You should have access to the users X environment. If you still have trouble. the hit ctrl+alt+F1 type "root" the psswd, then init 3 (or telinit 3) the rm -rf /tmp/* and the the same with rm -rf /tmp/.* What this does is remove the tmp files and other config files that may have permission sets and pointers to old configs and the cookie for X. Don't worry they will be recreated when you log back in via kdm Then go into the /home/<user name> and type rm -fr .mcop and rm .mcoprc, the into .kde and rm *-<host name> in my case it rm *-Crusher-1 which removes the symlink to /tmp/socket-Crusher-1 and /tmp/tmp-Crusher-1. Now, if you remove/clean out the /tmp (don't rm the /tmp dir itself) and removed the .mcop and mcoprc as well as the .kde/sockets-<host name> and .kde/tmp-<host name> files type from tty1 (crtl+alt+F1) do "init 5 or telinit 5 and you'll see the xserver restart. the ctrl+alt+F1 from the kdm screen and type exit or logout. the crtl+alt+F7 back into kdm login, login to users account. Then do as above in the konsole with sux. Forgive me if this is redundant, I don't know you experience level. Like I said, sometimes, after updates, host name changes, etc you have to clean out these files. It used to be a must with kde upgrades, and I still do it from time to time when kde get cranky. No, the X cookie is stored in $HOME/.Xauthority
If sux doesn't work, su, rm /root/.Xauthority , exit , sux. Then it should work.

Holy crow you guys .. your kill'in me here. Jason was correct, the "sux" method failed so we were onto other tricks. I will try as below. [snip] I thought he'd already tried sux, and found it didn't work. A while ago when I was running 8.1 sux stopped working for me... something screwy with PAM, I think. I couldn't fix it, but the alternatives I gave seemed to work until I installed 8.2.... :-) Just different ways to achieve the same result. Jason
I had no problems installing the suite itself. I first uninstalled 1.0.2 from SuSE 8.2 and Ximian's OO 1.0.3. So, it installs and all (single-user install) and every time I get a message saying "an unrecoverable error has occurred. All modified files have been saved and can probably be recovered at program restart." Any ideas as to why this is happening? - Greg On Sat, 2003-07-26 at 00:18, Kirby Nesbitt wrote:
