Run the KDE control panel as root, and in Applications, click on Login Manager. This allows you to edit the kdm settings. You may have a bit of a fight on your hands sometimes to stop SuSEConfig re-writing what you change, but it's a fight that can be won. :-)

I think there are settings somewherer in /etc/rc.config for the background, etc. If you set them in here, it should keep SuSEConfig happy.
