Hi. I am about to buy two laptops for my business, one of which (mine) I want to dual-boot with XP/SUSE [because we are running accounting s/w that won't run on Linux]. Any pointers as to which models to avoid etc? Thanks, Jake

I personally dual XP/SuSE 9.0 with a Dell Inspiron 8200 and its my primary machine. SuSE grabs everything except my Video and Wireless. I updated my Video and it was all set, but the wireless was a lost cause. Linuxant has a for price windows driver mod that works under linux, but support couldn't help me get it running so I scraped it.. :) I know its not what you asked, but I figure I tell u anyway :P --Charles
I have an Inspiron 8500 and it worked with 8.2 as well as 9.0. Only problem with the video (Nvidia) is that I had to set the resolution manually (1920X1200). I replaced the Broadcom wireless card with an Orinico card which works perfect. Art On Mon, 2004-01-19 at 16:59, Charles wrote:

Hi, I'm running XP Pro/SuSE 8.2 on a Fujitsu Siemens (Lifebook E Series 4010) and it works like a dream. It came pre-installed with XP, so I loaded up Knoppix and used Qparted to repartition, making space for SuSE and a shared Fat32 part. The laptop is running Intel video no problems. I'm not using wireless, so cannot comment.

I'm running a Sony pcg-grx700p with SuSE 9.0. I love it. It's also a dual boot XP/Linux. Check out http://www.emperorlinux.com/ They sell preconfigured Linux laptops. Even if you don't buy from them, you'll have a good idea what you can get that is supported. I highly recommend them though. -- Until later, Geoffrey esoteric@3times25.net Building secure systems inspite of Microsoft

Another dealer I can recommend is Powernotebooks.com. I've heard their prices "aren't the best", but they ARE very responsive [heck, for christmas I even got a card from them -- complete with a staff photo!] All that aside, they do sell systems with or WITHOUT any OS; if you get linux pre-loaded, then I believe you get mandrake. They also install linux with a commercial X-server [Xi graphics, I believe] -- for this, you're paying about a $10 premium over the cost of the X-server alone for them to do the installation work, but at least you know "it works" -- Yet another Blog: http://osnut.homelinux.net

I concure the sony GRX line are awesome machines and you don't have to get them pre-configured because SuSE 9.0 just knows how to do it right. (So does SuSE 8.2 pro). But before Jak runs out and builds a dual boot, (which wastes a lot of disk space and time and effort) he should try to install his accounting package under CrossOver Office. It might just work. If not, there is always Vmware from Vmware.com to run those few packages that won't work any other way. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen
Hi, I have this setup using an IBM R40. It works fine I use if for development and office stuff. The only things I haven't tried are: (a) The wireless stuff, but I haven't looked into it to see if this can be made to work. I did read that this wasn't supported but someone else may have more info on this (b) The firewire stuff but again I haven't tried it to see whether or not it works. It starts up ok a bootup. Apart from this everything works ok under 8.2 Before I brought mine I asked a couple of company's supplying linux on laptops to recommend one you might want to try this. Jake, A couple of us here are running 8.2/XP on HP nx9005 boxes (AMD 2400+) and all works a treat. To avoid - anything that flexes when you squeeze it (good rule for life actually). Damian

Any pointers as to which models to avoid etc? Thanks, In my limited experience, the main feature to watch out for is the acpi setup. For example, I used to have a Satellite Pro that used acpi to share irq's and, as a result, I couldn't get sound in Linux (including SuSE) without patching

I've managed to get SuSE 8.2 running on this Sony FX705. Great apart from the modem: http://www.snowblink.co.uk/archives/2003/10/25/linux_on_a_sony_vaio_fx705/ -- Snowblink: http://www.snowblink.co.uk/
Hi. I'm running dual boot Linux / Win XP on a Compaq Presario 900 Well, I've not booted on XP in the last two months ;-) I'm on Suse 9.0, but installed 8.2 before without trouble. All is working fine, except the 3D accel on the graphic car (ATI Radeon Mobility 7000 => Chipset ATI Cabo U1) -- Un Saludo. Carlos Lorenzo Matés
