But only if you have a permanent network connection. Notice that if the clock is off by some minutes, it will take hours till it synchronizes. Another note: use only stratum level two servers, not level one - unless you want to make a stratum 2 server yourself. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

Hello, I've build a xntp-4.2.0 RPM package for SuSE 8.2. In addition to the use of latest xntp version, I've added a patch for chroot no-root user from Timo Felbinger, and the default ntp.conf is based on pool.ntp.org servers. See a part of 'ntp.conf' about servers: ## ## ## If you want to use pool.ntp.org uncomment following repeated lines. ## you can tune your servers seting a zone nearest to your ## country. See http://www.pool.ntp.org ## ## example of zones ## uk.pool.ntp.org ## de.pool.ntp.org ## europe.pool.ntp.org ## north-america.pool.ntp.org # server pool.net.org # server pool.ntp.org # server pool.ntp.org # server pool.ntp.org You can download the rpms: http://www.oxixares.com/~gbv/rpms/SuSE_8.2/xntp-4.2.0-5.i586.rpm http://www.oxixares.com/~gbv/rpms/SuSE_8.2/xntp-4.2.0-5.src.rpm Although I've installed it in my ntp server with success, use it as your own risk. I will build a SuSE_9.0 version when I completed my ftp download and installed it in a machine. ;-) Guillermo -- Guillermo Ballester Valor Linux user #117181. ... Next you need to configure your /etc/ntp.conf ...
I'll just add that this is the recipe for SuSE Linux 8.2 and older. In 9.0, the configuration can be done via the NTP client module of YaST. -- A.M.

It tried to get the time from various servers in Germany and the Netherlands. But each time I got the message that the server cannot be reached. May have something to do with my firewall. Should I have any particular port open? Regards, Karel On Sat, 2003-12-06 at 15:27, Jerry Feldman wrote:

You have peaked my curiosity. I sent this as a private message to Thinker. Since this solved his problem, he asked me to post it to the full list:
NTP is a standard Linux utility. /usr/sbin/ntpd This should already be installed on your system. If not, just install it via YaST. Next you need to configure your /etc/ntp.conf The only thing you would need to do is to add 2 server lines. I copied mine. There is a web site that has a list of public time servers. (http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~mills/ntp/servers.html). The next step is to use the YaST run level editor to turn on the ntp daemon. Click on run level properties, then scroll to the bottom for xntpd, and turn it on for run levesl 3 and 5.

Yes!, UDP and TCP 123 ports.
Network time protocol is only UDP 123 if it is server to server. if it is server to client then it is 123 -> 1023or above and client to server is 1023 or bigger ->123 TCP is not used in NTP -- Togan Muftuoglu Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer http://susefaq.sf.net
