[SLE] Firefox going down or what?
Hi. After all that we've been through with different browsers and stuff it seemed to me that some people (like me, for example) came to Firefox as a pretty convenient and stable tool for browsing. And now i'm feeling strange, because of... one question: is it really impossible to make Firefox under Linux (SuSE 10.0) a little less SLO-O-OW? Its awful how this just-what-i-need browser locks up when opening page with flash animation, opening page with who-knows-what-else, how long it takes to start and lots of other things. Why? Why is the very same browser works fast (and i mean really fast) under Windows on my desktop? I like Linux, and i dislike Windows. Seems to me that after i started Opera once (just to compare) i start to dislike Firefox too. Firefox 1.5 is great browser. And i don't know how to make Opera (8.52) have the same functionality. So i whant to use Firefox, but i just can't... wait all that time it "works". Does anyone has any comments or suggestions on how to make Firefox work fast or how to make Opera function like Firefox with FlashGot, RIP, Adblock, ForecastFox. Appreciate any help. Thanks for your attention, Roma. PS is it possible to save web pages with pictures by Opera like all others do e.g. put all pictures into the separate folder: <web-page-name>_files?

Hmmm, I find this strange. In both SuSE 10 and Win 2000 I can start Opera first then start Firefox...guess which actually loads first? Firefox everytime. Perhaps it's the way I have my PCs set up? -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Xmas may be over but, PLEASE DON'T drink and drive you'll make it to the next one that way. Same for me. Firefox loads flash sites with no delays.

Yes, I've noticed Firefox is slow. It starts fast but browsing seems much slower than any other browser I have. I noticed it got a little faster when I got rid of Adblock and ForecastFox. I can't live with it either. Mark
Can anyone shed any light on the original posters problem as to why this browser is so sluggish? Mark

The nature of his complaint was so general that I chose not to respond earlier. I don't waste much time comparing which is faster on what machine with which distribution or OS... I am more concerned that my Linux system is consistent and stable and unobtrusive to my work. If a program gets inordinately slow, I'll investigate. My interpretation... on my own system... is Firefox gets slower to load as functionalities are added. I've now got a 'kazillion' functions bolted into it and can do an extraordinary number of things from inside the browser. I don't think this behavior is unusual, since Firefox must load, first, then verify the integrity of the installed plug-ins and extensions before loading them. If he comes back with a specific scenario, like "I installed xyz.xpt and now Firefox hangs every time I visit www.blahblah.com" then this gives us something more to work with. But without knowing his technical competency and capacity to maintain a stable Linux system and sort real problems out, it's just too hard to judge if his observations describe a real or subjective problem. regards, Carl
Hi. Ok. Enough weeping, now i'll try to be more technically precise. I've uninstalled all Firefox's extensions and themes. Pure Firefox 1.5.0.1 on SuSE 10.0 with latest updates from YOU. Open Gmail. This conversation. It shows me 22 messages. If more than last message is shown scrolling is slow (smooth scrolling is disabled). Another problematic site is http://www.nnm.ru. There are two flash banners. If they are on screen scrolling is slow and when they are off the screen everything seems ok. When i open some link on that site Firefox hangs for a second or two. Maybe i just need to get rid of macromedia's plugins? Strange, however, why the Opera works fine? What else do I need to specify to complete the picture? Bye, Roma.

Bye, Roma. ======== Roma, I'm sorry, I haven't been following this thread with great interest, so I may mention something that has already been covered. Are you using SuSE's build of Firefox 1.5? If so, you may want to remove it and get

That might be your solution to using the new 1.5 or going back as I did. Just a thought. Lee
Hi. Thanks for the advice with mozilla's build. I tried it. And... I dunno. :-\ It's really faster than one I've got from SuSE. It hasn't found flash plugin though. I guess that's why even the sites with flash like the one I've told do not slow down the browser. And now I'm totally confused. Should I install flash plugin? ;-) Need to try. Thanks, Roma. PS I even have had thought to try mozilla's sources to build firefox at my machine. If I'll have some free time I'll going to try that one and post the results. PPS In answer to James Wright: All other browsers (Opera, Konqueror) work really fast on this machine. I am connected via LAN inside which there is satellite dish (approx half-megabit). Connectin works good enough. None of the extensions/themes (except default ones) are installed.

I don't really know if it is relevant but you might be interested in hearing that Flash is not always working correctly in the Windows version of Firefox. I have 1.5.0.1 on this Win 2000 tin. Over the last couple of days I have had the browser positively lock up for about a minute. I then get a little box telling me that a Flash animation is causing Firefox to run very slowly. Too right it's sloooooooow. I don't know whether it is Flash at fault or Firefox. It does seem very strange that it appears to be happening for some people with Linux too. Just as a reminder, I am unable to check it on SuSE at the moment as that PC is being rebuilt; I'm having to wait for parts to arrive :-((( -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Xmas may be over but, PLEASE DON'T drink and drive you'll make it to the next one that way. Roman, Your flash plugin has to be installed in your Firefox plugins directory. If you haven't done that, then it's not going to work! There should be a softlink to the plugin in your Mozilla directory (/opt/Mozilla), that you can copy over to your Firefox. Everything just doesn't happen automatically for you. Lee

Mark It may be something going on with his network settings in Linux. Is Konquerer as slow, or is it much faster? Have any browsers besides Firefox been tested in Linux? I assume that you have a DSL connection, has it ever worked fast in Linux for you? Is it a buggy extension or a combination of extensions that are slowing this down. Have any changes been made in the about:config page? There could be many reasons. Answering theses questions might provide a better start.
