[SLE] protected packages in yast software manager
Hello all: This regards to SUSE 10.0: In the package manager of yast several packages are labeled 'protected', eg many of the kde update packages. How could I remove protection and make these packages labeled as the regular normal packages? right click on the "protected-icon" and change to "keep" you can also do the same for all packages shown in a list (be careful!) But as to my eyes this is not really necessary. If you want to update "locked" packages, let's say KDE, search for "kde", then check "packages -> all in this list -> update, if never version is available". You will see that the locked icon changes to the update icon on many packages. After the update they show the locked icon again. As much as I know the "locked" is mainly effective when performing the YOU online-update, then the locked ones will not get touched, but when you do it manually (like in the example above) there's no effect with it. Well, this is just what I experienced, doesn't have to be true ;-) regards Daniel -- Daniel Bauer photographer Basel Switzerland professional photography: http://www.daniel-bauer.com special interest site: http://www.bauer-nudes.com -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

[snipped] Thanks for the detailed explanation! I'll try what you suggested when I'll get back to that computer. Right clicking indeed changes the state to keep. However after exiting and reopening the package manager the packages' state again protected. So it seems this does not work. Any other idea? Sorry, no I don't have any other idea. I don't know where Yast saves its package state information... But as said, in my opinion it's just to protect you from automatically overwriting your packages by mistake (as far as I know, only "additional packages" that are not in the "standard distribution" or that you download and install yourself are marked as locked). If you update with Yast as described in my last post, Yast doesn't care about the locked state and just updates as usual. At least this is what "my" Yast does... However, the way I see it such "additional packages" would not get updated by YOU anyway, even if they are not marked as locked. So I don't see that it makes any difference or advantage wheter the packages are "locked" or not or any reason why you should want to permanently change the state from locked to keep. But if you have one: post it here, I'm sure there's somebody around who knows much better how to help you in this matter... regards Daniel -- Daniel Bauer photographer Basel Switzerland professional photography: http://www.daniel-bauer.com special interest site: http://www.bauer-nudes.com -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

Same here. Odd thing is that I have a few local packages that have become 'protected' in YaST. Except they are not. Installing new ones is ok. I do not list any package dependencies in these RPMs. So I do not know why they should become protected. I guess it is a bug. -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems AB Ramböll Sverige AB Kapellgränd 7 P.O.
