was wondering if anyone know if kword in the future will be able to open up msoffice docs. it looks very promising as a nice word processor. I see the file type of msoffice 97 when you go to open a file but it does not open/recognize the file format yet. jack thanks maybe there is a mail list for the kde office products that I can ask this in, anyone know the list name/address to subscribe to. jack jack malone Network Administrator EAST TEXAS LIGHTHOUSE FOR THE BLIND dba HORIZON INDUSTRIES 903-595-3444 http://www.horizonind.com
Yes, http://www.koffice.org/contact.phtml "To subscribe to KOffice's Mailing list, compose a mail to koffice-request@kde.org and type subscribe your-email-address in the subject of the message. Please write your real email address instead of the plain "your-email-address" words." Matt -- "The only thing complex about Linux are the users themselves." On Tue, 12 Jun 2001, Jack Malone wrote:

We were discussing this at work today... looking for solutions to the problem we will be facing with Office/Windows XP. If KOffice could read/export MSOffice formats like StarOffice can, there would be a serious business case to move over to KOffice. Anyway, you can find quite a bit of helpful information on http://www.koffice.org including a secion on filters and what is happening with them. C.
I was on that site an read the info an guess that the filter is not working just yet since I was not able to get it to import a word doc. thanks for the info though. jack

[snip] I have been poking around to try and get the MSWord import filter to work on the Solaris version of KDE and SuSE7.1 (with a KDE 2.1.1 update). Neither one seems to do anything much except generate errors. Has anyone had any success with import in KWord? The KOffice site filter status pages say that the Word import filter should be working... C.

Here is a synopsis of the features forthcoming in Kword: -------------------------------------------------------- Filters. Various import/export filters are available in most of the KOffice applications to support document exchange with users of other office suits. For more information on KOffice filter status, including import filters for MS WinWord 97 and MS Excel 97, please visit the KOffice filters status page. Changes since the last release include: New filter: Quattro Pro import filter for KSpreadImprovements to the MS WinWord and MS Excel import filters (less crashes, more features)I mprovements to the HTML and Abiword export filters ------------------------------------------------------- Most of these should be available in the Koffice 1.1 beta 3. It is scheduled for realease, in rpm form, on 25 June. The complete list of Kwoffice filters is here: http://www.koffice.org/filters/status.phtml along with their status. Also Abiword will import M$ docs as well as send documents out in RTF. I have on several occasions sent *.rtf documents, created with Abiword, to Microsoft boxes. In subsequent follow phone calls, I found that the recipients could read them and that the embedded *.png's wre rendered correctly. I also understand that Gnumeric will read Excel spreadsheets. Of related interest, Killustrator does a fine job of importing Xfig illustrations. -- Cheers, Jonathan

Kword 1.1 beta 2, which is now posted at the SuSE LinucKS site, does indeed read M$ docs. I read the very funny white paper "Linux in Retail & Hospitality What Every Retailer Should Know" published by the Microsoft people. It's just hilarious. So kword now reads M$ docs. -- Cheers, Jonathan
what is the url to that site where the kword beta is at.

Now Redmondians will start to get really nasty - 'cause now you don't need OXP if you don't want it and Office 97 and 2K users won't need to worry either. Now, Let a couple of CIO's or other decision making execs see it action and no more license agreement and upgrade blues/costs. And, I'm sure that the koffice team will be hard at work on bug reports and the next ersion. Give a look at: http://www.koffice.org/ Cheers.
